Chapter 412 Have I Misjudged Him?

Yet countless unknown creatures roamed the miasma forest.

While fleeing for his life, Arnold had accidentally lost the energy field.

Whether caused by the energy field’s influence or not, local beasts had mutated into even more horrifying forms.

Still, Arnold could pinpoint the general zone where the energy field fay.

Whenever he drew near that area, his mind grew far clearer.

‘So the energy field is most likely inside that cave where we first found Zeke, isn’t it?” Layla posed the question.

Arnold nodded.

Layla stroked her chin, a faint smile tugging at her lips. “If we have a general location, this gets much simpler.”

She turned toward Arnold. “Later, you are coming back with us to apologize to Zeke.”

“Huh?” Oliver blinked.

Arnold glanced over at Oliver. “Do you remember Zeke?”

Oliver flinched, revulsion crossing his face. “I remember him. He was the one who loved picking on me, ooth openly and behind my back.”

Arnold nodded. “I brought him with me when I ran away.”

Realization dawned on Layla. “So you abused Zeke because he used to bully Oliver?”

Arnold gave a short nod and shot Oliver a careful sideways glance.

He had preferred never to bring these old events up.

They counted as humiliating chapters from Oliver’s past.

But since Layla had brought Zeke up first, he could not hold his tongue.

Oliver shot instantly to his feet. His hands clenched tight, knuckles whitening, vengeful fire burning in his eyes. “Where is he? I’m going to beat him senseless.”

George scrambled to hold Oliver back.

He looked toward Layla and spoke softly. “Right now, we need to find the energy field. From everything we’ve heard, Zeke might know something.”

Arnold, beside them, nodded grimly. “If no one else had come along, the energy field should still be where it fell. I went back to search for it right away, yet the energy field was already gone.”

Arnold’s words cooled Oliver’s temper.

Seeing Oliver no longer ready to act on impulse, Layla stood and brushed dust off her clothes. “Let’s go. We’re heading back to see Zeke.”

Zeke’s mental state remained badly fractured.

Layla felt certain he was not faking his condition

She had seen countless people break mentally back in the apocalypse.

One could not fake the look in their eyes or their disjointed reactions.

Even so, the damaged-minded Zeke surely held pieces of the puzle.

Layla decided they had to go back and question him.

At the very least, they needed to get Zeke out of the miasma forest.

The program crew could treat him and see if they could restore his sanity.

That would greatly improve their chances of locating the energy field.

Layla laid out her plan. Everyone exchanged glances and agreed this was their best course of action.

Carson nodded and said, “Alright, Layla. We’ll do it your way.”

The whole group marched out of the cave and headed for the cavern where they had discovered Zeke.

Once they reached the cave entrance, Layla lifted a hand.

‘Only Carson and I will go inside. We don’t want Zeke panicking or growing suspicious,” she whispered.

With that, Layla stepped forward and entered.

Zeke huddled in the cave corner, trembling violently.

When he saw only Layla and Carson return, relief lit up his face. “Great, the bad man didn’t come back.”

Layla watched him and sighed quietly.

Zeke had done hateful things, yet he looked utterly wretched now.

Layla fixed her gaze on him and spoke in a steady tone. “Do you remember someone named Oliver?”

The instant that name registered, terror flooded Zeke’s features.

He shook his head frantically. “I don’t know him. I don’t know him.”

Zeke had not reacted like this before.

Layla narrowed her eyes.
