Chapter 41 You’re Really Planning to Stay Here?
It was obvious what he meant: she wasn’t a canine beastkin, so why would she eat bones?

Layla ignored his comment. “It’s getting dark. Shouldn’t you be heading back? A single male should be careful out there.”
“You’re worried about me?” Liam asked, a hint of amusement in his voice.
Layla was speechless.
Is this guy even listening?
[I can feel Layla’s frustration through the screen.]
[Layla: Just go already! You’re so annoying! Liam: You’re worried about me?]
[Seriously, I don’t see any sign that Layla is into Liam.]
[I’ll say it again, “Layla and Prof. Slater are having octuplets.”]
[I told you to close that fanfic app! Did you not listen at all?]
Liam picked up the jerky and left. He was almost at the entrance when Layla’s voice stopped him. “General Hartwell.”
Liam stopped and turned. “Anything else?”
“Next time, could you try to hunt something with longer fur?” Layla requested.
Liam sighed.
I shouldn’t have expected anything else from this female.
“I’ll try,” Liam said.
[That’s so sweet! He’s indulging her!]
[Oh my, you all need to stop shipping them! Stella’s fans will be here any minute, and they’re like leeches-once they latch on, you can’t shake them off.]
The moment Liam was gone, Layla pulled out the jar of fat. She cut the remaining venison into strips and tossed them into the melted fat to fry.
[See! What did I tell you? She was holding out on Liam!]
[Ugh, how gross! We should all be helping each other, and she’s hoarding food, keeping her guard up around him. No wonder he doesn’t like her.]

[What did I just say? Stella’s fans are like leeches. Once they show up, they’re stuck.]
[You know what, Stellights? You should just rename yourselves “Locusts.” You don’t seem to do anything useful, just go around annoying people.]
[Don’t you mean “Gnats”? Gnats are the ones that annoy everyone.]
Shane sat beside Layla, a fork in his hand, watching the sizzling meat in the pot. When a piece looked done, he fished it out and laid it on the bamboo mat.
They worked together, and soon the other half of the deer was all fried.
Only the pot of bones was left. At this temperature, they’d keep until morning.
“Alright, bedtime,” Layla announced, getting up and climbing into the treehouse.
Shane followed right behind her, climbing up as if it were the most natural thing.
Layla looked at him, one eyebrow raised. “What are you doing up here?”
Before, Shane had always slept in the stone shelter below. She’d had the treehouse to herself, nice and spacious.
Most importantly, this was a dating show, but she was here to survive a year and win the planet.
She wasn’t here for romance, just the money. Males needed to stay away.
Shane stood there. He was a good head taller than her, and when he looked down, he could see the twin cowlicks on the top of her head.
“It’s getting cold,” he said simply.
Layla felt her guard drop a little.
So he’s not interested in me that way. I was overthinking it.
As long as he wasn’t trying to drag her into a relationship and mess with her money-making plans, sharing a sleeping space was fine.
Layla didn’t argue. She turned and went inside the treehouse.
Seeing she wasn’t going to stop him, Shane followed.
Shane was right; it was getting colder. That was exactly why she’d asked Liam to bring back a furry animal next time-she needed the pelts for blankets or bedding to stay warm.
[Did I hear that right? Prof. Slater’s reason was “it’s getting cold?” Isn’t he a snake?]

[Well, it makes sense. Snakes don’t do well in the cold-they grow sluggish and even hibernate. Maybe he just wants to stay cozy…?]
[Makes sense? How? He’s a snake beastkin, yes, but that only affects him a little. He’s been fine all these years. I’ve never heard him complain about the cold.]
[He led a team to Planet Polaris last year. That place is so cold you can barely stand. Everyone else was freezing, but he was completely fine. And you’re telling me he’s cold? I think he’s up to something!]
Neither Shane nor Layla paid any mind to the drama unfolding in the live chat.
After washing up, Layla sat on the wooden bed. She watched Shane, who had already lain down on the floor and pulled the wolf pelt over himself. “You’re really planning to stay here?”
Shane’s expression darkened, and his voice dropped. “We have an agreement.”
“I’m not trying to kick you out. It’s just… this is a dating show. Even with the live feed, considering your past with Stella and my own complicated situation with her, you staying in my room every night… how is that supposed to work out for the two of them later?”
Shane sat up, leaning his back against the wooden wall. His green, reptilian eyes were eerily bright in the dark. “What past do I have with Stella?”
“Aren’t you two…”
“No,” Shane cut her off before she could finish. “I remember explaining this. I am not Stella’s fiancé. If you were my student with a memory like that, you’d definitely fail.”
