Chapter 36 I Just Humiliated Myself

Layla treated Liam and Shane very differently.

He’d barely taken a few bites when Layla snatched the plate right from in front of him. “I think you’re almost full. I’ll give the rest to Prof. Slater. He’s been working hard and needs the energy.”

Liam looked at the plate, then at her.

Is this just revenge?

“I think I can finish that,” Liam argued, still genuinely hungry.

What kind of male gets full on just a dozen pieces of fish?

“I don’t care what you think,” Layla said, ignoring him. She pointed toward the entrance. “You’re done eating. Shouldn’t you be heading back now?”

Liam shot her an annoyed look. “Why are you acting like this toward me now?”

“How should I be acting toward you, then?” Layla put down her fork and fixed him with a sharp

stare.

She didn’t actually dislike Liam. Honestly, seeing his boyish face every day was rather pleasant.

If he weren’t Stella’s fiancé, Layla might have even considered winning him over.

But that was not an option.

Liam was the heroine’s fiancé. In stories, anyone who stole the heroine’s love interest always met a terrible end. Layla had no intention of suffering the original host’s fate.

Liam met her clear, unyielding gaze, one that held no pretense at all, and felt an inexplicable twinge of guilt.

“I’m going out tomorrow and might not be back by evening,” Shane said, easing the tension between Layla and Liam. “Could you prepare some extra food for me, Layla?”

It finally dawned on Liam that Shane had interrupted them on purpose.

He raised an eyebrow at Shane, who wore his usual blank, oblivious expression, waiting seriously for Layla’s reply.

Already used to this side of Shane, Layla simply nodded. “Sure, I’ll make you some jerky tonight.”

“Can I have some too?” Liam asked. He knew what the answer would be, but he had to ask

anyway.

George got to eat her jerky, and he had supplied all the ingredients-yet he hadn’t had a single bite.

Layla glanced at him, a mocking smile tugging at her lips. “What do

you

think?”

Liam grimaced.

Great. I just humiliated myself.

“Of course you can,” Layla suddenly said, breaking into a bright smile.

Shane, who had been stacking three fish slices on his fork, jerked his head up in surprise.

Layla paid no mind to his shock. She was already planning how to use Liam to her advantage.

She pulled some pre-made jerky from a jar, her tone unexpectedly warm. “This is wolf meat, and this is lion. Try both, General Hartwell.”

[I suddenly have a bad feeling about this.]

[Where are all the people who said Layla wasn’t seducing General Hartwell? Speak up! Can’t she live without chasing men?]

[Open your eyes! It’s obvious Layla’s scheming against him. Where’s the seduction?]

Liam felt an unsettling chill, as if he were being sized up by a hunter. He took a piece from each batch of jerky and tasted them.

They were tough. As a herbivorous deer, he was unused to dried meat and could barely tell the two apart.

Still, he had to admit they tasted rather good.

“Is it good?” Layla asked, eyes sparkling.

Liam couldn’t lie. “Yeah, it’s good.”

He reached for another piece, only for Layla to put the jerky away.

“You supply the ingredients, I’ll preserve them for you. My fee is half your raw stock. Deal?”

Shane let out a quiet sigh of relief.

Oh, so that’s what this is about. Thank goodness.

Liam frowned. He’d suspected she was plotting something, but never that she would demand

half of everything.

Layla launched into her pitch. “None of you know how to cook or preserve food, right? You hunt and eat everything the same day.”

Liam nodded. It was true. Stella had never stepped foot in a kitchen, and neither had he, Carson, or Oliver.

George was the only one with any culinary sense, and all he could do was slice raw fish-it hardly counted as preservation.

Even with the cooler weather, any game they hunted would spoil by the next evening.

“Winter is only a month away. Once it arrives, game will grow scarce. If you don’t stockpile food now, what will you do on the days you return empty-handed from hunting? Will you let Stella starve alongside you?”

As an imperial general, Liam understood how vital supply lines were. Without stored food, surviving on this barren world would be nearly impossible.

Stella’s hunger wasn’t truly his concern. His only concern was his own.

“Half is too much. A quarter,” Liam bargained.

Layla’s eyes lit up. Anyone who haggled was a serious customer. She had no fear of negotiation -only of complete disinterest.
