Chapter 356 Find Roger
A contented belch escaped Gavin.
He glanced at Nick’s stormy expression in the gloom and sighed, “Why you gotta be so stubborn, man? Gotta keep your strength up if we’re gonna get outta here.”
Nick turned, a sharp, cunning grin cutting through his grimace. “We’re getting out. Now.”
Thinking his companion had finally cracked under pressure, Gavin shook his head and moved to settle in a corner.
His movement halted as he watched Nick crawl over to the spot where Layla had kicked the plate.
Using only his mouth, Nick painstakingly picked up a large, sharp fragment of ceramic.
“Seriously?” Gavin blurted, disbelief in his tone. “You’re gonna eat off the floor now? Pride’s one thing, man…”
Nick ignored him, gripping the shard firmly between his teeth.
His eyes, gleaming with fierce intent, locked onto Gavin.
Understanding dawned. “The ropes… we can cut them?”
Nick nodded sharply and motioned Gavin to turn around.
What followed was an arduous, silent hour of grinding the ceramic edge against the tough fibers binding Gavin’s wrists.
Finally, with a soft snap, the rope gave way.
“Free!” Gavin gasped, swiftly untying his ankles and stretching his liberated limbs.
He took a deep, savoring breath of the stale air.
Nick grunted impatiently, jerking his chin toward his own bound hands and feet. His mouth was raw and bleeding from the struggle.
“Right, right!” Gavin scrambled over, quickly slicing through Nick’s restraints.
Layla had been listening the whole time.
As the faint sounds of movement grew more confident inside, she exchanged a glance with Carson and the others. They slipped out silently.
Just before leaving, Layla raised her voice deliberately, calling to Yates, “Head over to Emily’s later, would you? Ask Jacob what kind of berries he uses for his homemade wine. And don’t dawdle-come straight back.”
“Sure thing,” Yates replied agreeably, utterly unaware of the ruse. Layla had kept him in the dark deliberately; his nervous nature would have betrayed them.
Inside the dark room, Nick and Gavin exchanged triumphant looks
“Our chance,” Nick hissed, the words painful through his injured mouth.
“Finally!” Gavin whispered excitedly. “Let get out of this hellhole!”
“Only three people inside. We move now,” Nick muttered.
Gavin asked, “Roger’s being held here, right, Nick?”
“He was brought here according to the last intel,” Nick said.
The “Roger” they mentioned was none other than Roger Frost, the pit viper beastkin, who had been secretly imprisoned by Fiona.
He was Leonard’s older brother, born into the same crushing poverty.
While Leonard had sold himself to the Grant family’s secret berserker rage experiments for money, Roger had taken a different path, joining the interstellar pirates.
He’d later reconnected with his brother and, in a twisted mirror of his fate, also begun using the serum.
Under the veil of dusk, the pair crept silently to the edge of the director’s team camp.
Roger was confined alone-likely because no one anticipated visitors on this barren world; the security was surprisingly lax.
The instant the guard tilted his head to drink, Gavin clamped a hand over his mouth and nose, channeling a faint pulse of beast-energy through his fingertips. Both guards crumpled soundlessly into unconsciousness.
Biting back the sting in his own lips, Nick slipped into the chamber where Roger was held and set to work on the lock.
A soft snick echoed in the quiet, and the energy seal gave way.
Inside, Roger lay pallid and exposed, his skin a map of injection sites from whatever serums.
