Chapter 354 Bad Temper?
Leonard, however, exploded. “You’re dead!” he roared, already beginning to shift into his beast form.
Julian’s eyes widened in alarm. He threw out a hand to stop Leonard.
But Leonard batted him away with brutal force, sending Julian flying backward to land hard on the ground.
Layla’s suspicion solidified.
He held nothing back. Just like those two pirates-something’s wrong with him too.
Whether it was the berserker rage drug or the parasite’s influence remained to be seen.
She faced Leonard coolly. “First you steal, now you want a fight?” Layla challenged, stepping forward to meet him.
Leonard’s long-simmering resentment toward Layla boiled over. With an enraged snarl, he charged.
His form was now half-transformed, face covered in tough snake scales.
He fought with vicious intent, even spitting a jet of venom straight at Layla’s face.
She dodged nimbly.
Liam and Carson seized the opening, moving in to pin Leonard down with practiced efficiency.
Layla spun and delivered a solid punch to his temple, her other hand snagging a fistful of his hair in the process.
Leonard thrashed and cursed, spewing venomous threats at Layla. But pinned by Carson and Liam, he was powerless.
“You’ll pay for this! I’ll kill you!” he spat, eyes burning with hate.
Layla merely smiled at the threat. She turned to the wronged hunter. “Take your prize and go. We’ll handle things here.”
Grateful, the male hoisted the heavy crocodile and hurried off without a backward glance.
Once he was out of sight, Layla gave a slight wave. Carson and Liam released their hold.
Leonard had reverted to his normal appearance, though a poisonous gleam lingered in his eyes.
Julian scrambled to his feet, stepping protectively in front of Leonard. “Please… let this go. He’s just hot- headed. The item’s been returned.”
Layla raised an eyebrow, intrigued by Julian’s fierce protectiveness. “Didn’t realize you two were so close.”
Layla confirmed with a nod, leaning closer to whisper, “His outburst was identical to theirs. And Julian’s reaction… it felt like he was terrified we’d discover something.”
Taking her words to heart, Shane secured the hair sample. “I’ll run the tests.”
Emily approached, worry etched on her face. “Leonard won’t forget this. You all need to be extra careful, especially when you’re sleeping.”
Layla offered a reassuring smile. “Don’t worry. We don’t have any pushovers here. Everyone can handle themselves.”
The comment drew easy laughter from her group.
As they prepared to part ways, Jacob pressed a small object into Layla’s hand. “If you ever need help, use this signal flare. I’ll come running.”
Layla looked down at the simple, firework-style flare in her palm-a surprisingly quaint piece of tech for this place.
A soft laugh escaped her. “Thank you.”
On the walk back, Liam’s voice was low and serious. “What if they really are using banned substances?”
A cool, calculated smile touched Layla’s lips. “Then we have proof the berserker rage drug is in play. After that, we let the viewers do the rest.”
She gestured toward the Vanguards hovering nearby. “Once it’s confirmed, the court of public opinion will tear them apart. We won’t need to lift a finger.”
