Chapter 268 The Rescue
She remained the center of attention, the beloved princess of the Grant family who had it all.
The thought brought a cold, ruthless smile to Stella’s lips.
Watching her silently, Oliver felt a sudden chill shoot through his heart at the sight of Stella’s expression.
Following close behind, he joined Shane and the others aboard the aircraft.
Since the vessel could only carry four passengers at a time, Daisy was left behind at the top/
Looking down with worry, she called out to them, “You have to bring Layla back! If you aren’t up in two hours, I’m going down with Mr. Lewis’ team.”
Shane simply nodded at Daisy, offering no further words.
Yet, the rare, constant furrow of his brow betrayed his inner anxiety.
The craft descended slowly, the roar of the waterfall rushing from the cliffside growing louder by the second.
Finally, they touched down on the ground below.
No sooner had their feet hit the earth than a massive shadow loomed over them.
Liam started, his hand instantly flying to his weapon.
Luckily, the silhouette belonged to King Kong.
It had actually leaped down from the cliff; it must have been worried about Layla to take such a risk.
Scarcely finding his footing, King Kong immediately strode off in a specific direction.
Liam barked an order, “Let’s follow it!”
The four of them chased after King Kong’s massive figure.
Eventually, King Kong stopped at the entrance to a well-hidden cave.
The charred remains of a fire pit were clearly visible near the mouth.
Liam’s eyes lit up. “Someone built a fire here. It must be Layla and Carson!”
They rushed inside without hesitation.
Shane led the way.
But the moment he burst in and saw the scene inside, he froze in his tracks.
There, within the cave, Layla was nestled in Carson’s arms, sleeping soundly.
Just as everyone came to a halt, Carson’s eyes flew open.
He had expected a wild animal intruder, not Shane and the rescue team.
A fleeting look of disappointment flashed through his gaze.
Carson gave the sleeping Layla a gentle shake.
Her eyes fluttered open, heavy with sleep.
From her angle, she couldn’t see Shane or the others yet.
“What’s wrong? Is something happening?” Her voice was husky, thick with drowsiness.
If Layla had truly fallen for Carson, their family was about to gain a new member.
Knowing the aircraft could only take four, Carson took a step back without hesitation to stand beside Oliver.
“You guys go up first. We’ll wait for the next one,” he said.
To his surprise, Shane insisted on staying as well.
He looked at Carson with a complex, unreadable smile. “It’s been a long time. I’ll keep you two company down here.”
Then, he turned to Liam and George. “Take Layla back first. She’s hurt; she needs proper treatment.”
Layla wanted to object, but she closed her mouth the moment she made eye contact with Shane.
He’s clearly trying to get rid of us.
Is he jealous because he saw me sleeping in Carson’s arms?
Oh well. I’ll coax him later when he gets back.
Shane is the easiest to handle.
In truth, Layla hadn’t developed any romantic feelings for Carson.
If not for that accident, their paths wouldn’t have crossed so often.
Now that she was found, things could return to normal. They would go back to their own lives.
Watching the aircraft carrying Layla ascend, Shane turned to look directly at Carson. “You like Layla.”
Carson was stunned by Shane’s blunt statement.
