This wasn't just torment; it was having her dignity thrown into the dirt and stomped into pieces.
She had absolutely no pride left.
To make matters worse, Eleanor was practically skipping around Lillian with glee. "Did you hear her? She told me to hit her! She told me to do it. Is she a psycho or something? Is she?"
When facing Sabrina and Martin, Lillian's expression remained ice-cold, but the moment she turned to her mother, a gentle, radiant smile graced her lips.
The seamless transition was striking.
Lillian nodded and smiled warmly. "Yes, my mom is the kindest person in the world. Whatever people ask of her, she gives."
She gave away the title of Mrs. Mercer, and she gave that slap just as freely.
It was for the best. Lillian refused to let her mother get dragged down when the Mercer family finally met their ruin. Even though the Lancaster and Mercer families had bound their marriage tightly together, Lillian had long ago resolved to find a way to sever those ties.
She knew that if her mother were in her right mind, a divorce is exactly what she would want.
Sabrina wanted the title of Mrs. Mercer so desperately, wanting to formally join the Mercer family.
Lillian figured her mother would be more than happy to grant that wish.
So, the title was hers.
And today, Sabrina had asked for a slap, which Eleanor generously provided.
Sabrina looked utterly aggrieved, her face twisting as she fought back tears. The moisture pooling in her eyes made her humiliation undeniable.
But Martin subtly squeezed her hand, a silent command to endure it.
She had to swallow her pride and finish what she had started.
Just as Sabrina forced herself to speak again, Martha approached Lillian and whispered something in her ear.
Lillian frowned slightly before nodding in agreement.
"Bring him to the garden here."
Catching the dangerous shift in Lillian's tone, Brandon Mercer immediately stepped in to do damage control. "Lillian, Dad didn't mean it like that.
"It's just that we're all family here. If an outsider walks in and sees this, it's going to reflect terribly on all of us...
"Lillian, why don't you let Dad get up first?"
Brandon was only trying to protect Martin's dignity.
After all, a blow to his father's reputation was a blow to his own.
Lillian let out a cold scoff. "Relax. There are no outsiders here. You're all family."
Just as the words left her mouth, a figure was led toward them by the staff.
Lillian watched the scene unfold with a chillingly calm gaze. As far as she was concerned, the Mercer family and this approaching guest were exactly that—a family.
She was the only true outsider here.
