Better Late, But Never His Again novel Chapter 86

The Corner Cafe was tucked away in a quiet alley. Evelyn sat in the furthest private booth, a stone-cold Americano sitting untouched in front of her. She kept checking her phone, her anxiety spiking by the second. She was terrified of the man she was waiting for, but right now, she had no other choice.

The door was violently shoved open, slamming against the wall with a heavy thud.

Sean Sutton swaggered in, wearing a crumpled black jacket. His hair was a greasy mess, and deep, bruised bags hung under his eyes, making him look like he hadn't slept in days.

The moment he locked eyes on Evelyn, his face twisted in pure rage, the veins bulging aggressively against his temples. He closed the distance in two massive strides, grabbed a fistful of her hair, and yanked hard. His other hand swung high and cracked violently across her face.

"You absolute bitch! Do you have any idea what Hazel did to me?! She had me thrown in jail! If it wasn't for you, I never would have been locked up!"

His anger seemed to feed on itself, and he yanked her hair even harder. "You didn't even try to hide from me, you actually came looking for me? Are you asking for a death wish?"

Evelyn cried out as the searing pain shot across her scalp. Yanked sideways, she instinctively threw her arms up to shield her head, shrinking desperately toward the underside of the table. Her voice trembled uncontrollably. "Stop hitting me! I came to you because we need to work together!"

Sean's hand hovered in the air. He was still panting heavily, his fury nowhere near satisfied.

He glared down at her for two solid seconds before backhanding her across the face again. Evelyn's head snapped to the side. A bright red welt instantly flared across her cheek, and tears welled up as a pathetic sob ripped from her throat.

Sean pulled out a chair and dropped into it. He crossed his legs, leaned back, and crossed his arms, staring down at her with absolute disgust. "What could you possibly want with me? What, finally realized you're worthless and want to come crawling back?"

Evelyn pressed a trembling hand against her bruised cheek. Taking a shaky breath, she forced the tears back down and looked up at him, fighting to keep her voice steady.

"Evelyn, you cheating whore! You're really out here screwing other men?!"

He shot up out of his chair and swung at her again, harder than before. The force of the slap sent Evelyn entirely out of her seat and crashing onto the floor.

She shrieked in terror, scrambling desperately under the table. Wrapping her arms tight around her head, she shook violently, practically screaming, "Stop hitting me! We both want the exact same thing! We both want to ruin Hazel! Just let me finish!"

Sean stood over her, breathing heavily, his fists cracking as he clenched them tight.

He stared down at her pathetic, cowering form, his eyes burning with lethal intent. It took a long moment before he finally dropped back into his chair. He pulled out a cigarette, lit it, and glared at her with pure malice.
