Better Late, But Never His Again novel Chapter 38

Hazel stared at the words on her screen, a bitter, mocking smirk curling her lips.

In five years of marriage, he had never once asked her for photographic proof of her whereabouts. Forget love—he clearly didn't even possess a shred of basic trust in her anymore. Yet, off a single paranoid comment from Evelyn, he suddenly suspected her.

She opened her camera roll and scrolled to a photo she had taken a few days ago when she went back to grab the divorce papers. She never expected it to come in handy this quickly.

She attached the photo and typed a quick reply.

"I'm home, just came back to grab a few things. Why?"

After hitting send, she locked her phone and looked up.

Marcus stood a short distance away, a champagne flute in his hand. He was watching her, his eyes dancing with amusement, as if he were enjoying a highly entertaining show.

Hazel walked over and stood beside him, smiling politely. "Mr. Thornton, my apologies for keeping you waiting."

Marcus said nothing. He simply shot her a look, then tilted his head slightly, signaling her to follow.

The two of them walked further into the venue.

On the other side of the room, Julian checked his phone. It was indeed a picture of the house. Even though Hazel wasn't in the frame, the background was undeniably the master bedroom, and the items he had brought home just a couple of days ago were visible in the shot. It couldn't be a fake.

Besides, Hazel had never lied to him before. The thing she feared most in the world was making him angry.

A smug look of validation crossed Julian's face. He smiled affectionately and handed the phone to Evelyn.

"See? I told you she was at home. How could she possibly end up in a place like this?"

Evelyn glanced at the photo, and the last shred of her anxiety completely vanished.

She knew a pathetic housewife like Hazel could never secure an invite to an event like this, and Marcus definitely wasn't blind enough to pick her.

Julian had quite the reputation in elite circles. His title as a top-tier lawyer carried significant weight, and even a corporate shark like Zane was familiar with his work.

Not to mention, Julian was the heir to the Hayes Estate. With his family background, everyone naturally held him in high regard.

Julian smiled and shook his hand. "Mr. Sheridan, it really has been a while."

Zane's gaze shifted to Evelyn standing beside him, a flash of genuine appreciation in his eyes.

Julian immediately pulled Evelyn forward, his tone lacing with pride. "Mr. Sheridan, this is Dr. Evelyn Vance, who just parachuted into the Capital Research Institute."

Zane raised an eyebrow, his gaze sweeping over Evelyn with deliberate interest.

"Oh? So this is the genius who secured the investment from Apex Holdings? Beauty and brilliance, I see."
