Better Late, But Never His Again novel Chapter 29

Nellie took the document, scanned it thoroughly, and nodded. "Alright, I'll draft the addendums right now. Once it's finalized, you take it back. Do not let him find this."

She paused, looking up at Hazel with grave seriousness.

"Hazel, you have to be extremely careful. If he finds out, he can tear this up at any moment. If he contests the divorce, even if the cooling-off period passes, you won't be able to finalize it."

Hazel's face was utterly blank, her eyes a desolate, numb void. "He'll agree to it."

Nellie looked confused.

"For Evelyn's sake," Hazel said flatly, "there's no way he would refuse."

Nellie’s heart broke for her best friend. Just then, Hazel’s phone buzzed with a notification.

She pulled it out. It was an update alert from that anonymous online forum. Clicking on the notification, her thumb immediately froze over the screen.

The user had just posted a new update featuring a photo of a shiny new property deed.

The caption read: *Girls, he straight up bought me an ultra-private luxury penthouse! We just signed the contract today, and the deed is already in my hands, all so my ex-husband can never find me. Who dares say he doesn't love me? When a man truly loves you, he will spend millions on you. Where a man puts his money is where he puts his heart. You ladies better start spending your man's money, before some other woman does!*

Hazel stared at the photo, a deafening ringing filling her ears. It felt as if a vice had clamped down on her lungs, making it impossible to breathe.

Julian had actually bought Evelyn a multi-million dollar luxury penthouse, purely on the excuse of hiding her from her ex-husband.

She remembered her own birthday last year. She had fallen in love with a car worth a little over a hundred thousand dollars and casually mentioned it to Julian. He had just smiled and promised to buy it for her "someday."

That "someday" never came. She had rationalized it, assuming he thought it was an unnecessary expense since they already had a car at home.

Yet now, he was dropping millions on a penthouse for Evelyn without batting an eye.

Evelyn was right. Where a man puts his money is where he puts his heart.

In all their years of marriage, the most expensive gift Julian had ever bought her was a designer dress worth a few thousand dollars. And even then, he explicitly told her he wanted her to wear it while they had sex—it was a gift bought solely for his own pleasure.

Hazel took a deep, shuddering breath, shoving the suffocating agony back down into the dark.

They always said money was the best skincare a woman could buy, and Evelyn was currently the glowing testament to that truth.

Catching sight of Hazel, Evelyn's eyes lit up. She practically skipped over to her.

"Hazel, you're here! I heard from Julian that you went back to the house this morning. Did you forget something? Do you need me to call Julian and have him drop it off for you?"

Hazel shot her a glacial look, ignoring the blatant territorial power play in her words.

Unfazed by the silence, Evelyn’s gaze shifted to the ugly purple bruise on Hazel's cheek. Instantly, she bit her lip, and her eyes welled with pathetic, glistening tears. Once again, she played the role of the tragic, helpless victim, acting as if she were the one who had been beaten.

"Is your face feeling any better?"

Hazel stared at her, utterly unresponsive.

Evelyn looked down, her voice trembling with manufactured guilt, while a sharp, triumphant sneer flashed through her eyes—a sneer meant only for Hazel to see.

"Hazel, you do believe that I didn't push you into him on purpose, right?"
