Better Late, But Never His Again novel Chapter 151

Julian said, "See, honey? I told you Gideon would be fine. You worry too much."

Hazel leaned back in the passenger seat, resting her head against the window. She didn't even bother opening her eyes, too exhausted to argue. She had verified Gideon's safety with her own eyes; it had absolutely nothing to do with Julian.

All she wanted now was to get back and sleep.

As the car merged onto the main road, Julian's phone rang.

The ringtone pierced the quiet interior of the car. Hazel didn't need to look to know who it was. Given the late hour, and the custom tone he had specifically assigned to Evelyn, it was obvious. She had heard it far too many times.

Driving with one hand, Julian grabbed his phone and glanced at the screen. A slight frown formed on his face.

He immediately pulled the car over, turning to look at her with an apologetic expression.

"Honey, grab a cab home first. Something came up and I need to handle it."

Without a word, Hazel unbuckled her seatbelt, pushed the door open, and stepped out. Her movements were sharp and decisive, closing the door without a second of hesitation.

Julian rolled down the window and watched her. She stood under the streetlamp, the overhead light casting shadows across her face, making her expression unreadable.

She had gotten out so quickly, without even asking a single question. Did she really despise being around him that much?

Swallowing his frustration, Julian ultimately held his tongue. "Text me when you get home," he said slowly.

"Yeah."

Hazel watched the direction his car sped off in. It was the exact route to Evelyn's luxury penthouse.

When Julian pushed open the door to Evelyn's apartment, only a single floor lamp was on, casting a dim glow across the living room.
