‘Already? That was fast, Natasha thought, feeling a little out of it.

She knew Jared must’ve pulled some strings to make this happen.

But this was exactly what she’d asked for.

She wondered why there was a tiny ache in her heart.

Natasha wrapped up her resignation in record time, not wasting a single second.

As she was packing up her things, Camilla rushed in.

“Joelle, what’s going on? Why are you suddenly quitting?” Camilla blurted out.

Yesterday, Natasha had been promoted to vice president, and Camilla had been so happy for her.

She never expected Natasha to quit so soon.

It was way too sudden.

Natasha was at a loss for words.

On the surface, she looked perfectly composed, but inside, she was a storm of tangled emotions.

“I didn’t feel like working anymore, so of course I resigned.”

She answered Camilla in a calm, almost detached tone.

Camilla couldn’t get it. “Are you for real? You finally make it to vice president and quit out of nowhere?”

Many people in this company would kill for that spot.

But Natasha walked away right after getting promoted.

Joelle took a deep breath and said, “I’m looking to grow my career somewhere else.”

Camilla’s eyes widened. “Somewhere else? Are you thinking of going back to Whittier Group?”

Before Natasha could reply, Camilla sighed, clearly envious. “Life’s so easy for an heiress like you. You can quit whenever you feel like it, and your family’s company will always have your back.”

Natasha looked uneasy.

She wasn’t the spoiled rich girl Camilla imagined.

Leaving this company didn’t mean she planned to go back to Whittier Group.

The complicated issues she had with the Whittier family were impossible to explain to anyone outside.

Natasha kept her head down, quietly gathering her little desk plant, some files, and a couple of photo frames.

She stuffed everything into a cardboard box.

“Keep at it. I’m outta here,” Natasha said as she left.

Once she was gone, Camilla would probably move up to Joelle’s assistant spot.

Camilla walked her out. “Natasha, let’s grab coffee sometime.”

Natasha gave her a smile, hugged the box to her chest, and stepped into the elevator, heading straight down to the underground parking lot.

On her way to her car, carrying the box in her arms, Natasha suddenly ran into Zayn Jackson.

He looked like he’d wrapped up something outside and was rushing back in.

He wasn’t paying attention and ended up bumping right into Natasha.

Natasha was totally blindsided and went down hard.

The box she was carrying went flying, and all her stuff scattered across the floor.

Her knee slammed into the ground, tearing the skin open.

Blood started to bead instantly.

“Sorry, I didn’t see you…” Zayn apologized quickly.

While apologizing, he scrambled to help her gather up her scattered things.

Natasha shook her head. “It’s okay…”

Zayn scooped up her things and handed the box back to her.

He caught a glimpse of her bleeding knee out of the corner of his eye.

Zayn looked even more guilty. “Sorry, I made you get hurt. Let me take you to the hospital.”

Natasha shook her head. “It’s a little injury. No need for the hospital.”

She tried to stand, but the pain in her knee nearly made her lose her balance and fall again.

“Careful!” Zayn called out.

He reached out in time to steady her.

Natasha found herself with half her body leaning into his arms.

Zayn’s hand wrapped around her slender waist.

The scene looked pretty suggestive.

Natasha awkwardly scrambled out of his arms, her face burning with embarrassment.

What Natasha didn’t realize was that one of Percy’s operatives, secretly staking out near her car, had already caught the whole scene on camera.

Percy had ordered his people to investigate and find out who Natasha’s new flame really was.

This operative had been lying in wait by Natasha’s car, looking for the perfect moment to snap some incriminating photos

Sure enough, he finally struck gold.

Zayn apologized again, looking really apologetic. “Let me drive you. Why don’t you take my car? I’ll take you.”

Natasha glanced at her knee. It looked pretty bad.

She couldn’t tough it out anymore, so she nodded. “Alright, thanks.”

Zayn helped her over to his car and handed her a band-aid from his emergency kit.

Natasha took it and slid into the passenger seat.

Without wasting a second, Zayn pulled out of the parking lot.

The guy tailing Natasha snapped a few more shots of her getting into Zayn’s car, then floored it and followed after them.

Even though Natasha said no at first, Zayn wouldn’t take no for an answer and ended up driving her straight to the nearest hospital.

He made sure the doctor got her knee patched up, and didn’t let up until he was sure she was fine.

“How about this? To make it up to you, let me treat you to dinner later,” Zayn said.

“No need,” Natasha replied instinctively.

Despite Natasha’s protests, Zayn insisted and brought her to a restaurant anyway.

Natashaurally, someone lurking nearby snapped photos of them having dinner together.

“Natasha, I know you’ve already quit, but whatever you decide to do, I’m always on your side,” Zayn said, his eyes full of sincerity.

“Thanks,” Natasha gave him a quick smile.

Then she focused on her food again.

Zayn gazed at her, his eyes full of affection, and suddenly confessed, “Actually, I’ve liked you for a long time…”

Natasha froze, her fork hovering in midair.

She looked up at him, her eyes wide with surprise.

“You…” Natasha blinked, totally stunned.

Zayn looked at her, his eyes full of longing. “Dorothy told me you’re single now. So… would you give me a shot?”

He’d kept those words buried deep inside for so long.

But when Natasha suddenly quit, the thought of never seeing her again hit him like a punch to the gut.

So today, he finally worked up the nerve to say it.
