Nina:
It felt like my whole life revolved around this one thing.
I kept scheming just so I could have a lot of money.
But if I put that aside, I genuinely liked Sawyer. I really did.
Yeah, it wasn't some crazy kind of love where I'd do anything for him, but he was handsome, and on top of that, he was very rich.
But now, once again, I was lonely, and my life was basically all about trying to save money, find a good job, and survive.
I sighed as I slowed my jog.
I was staying at the guest house, which was far enough from the main mansion that I barely saw anyone anymore.
To be honest, I was beginning to feel lonely.
At first, I really tried to flirt with Baxter, but I quickly realized he was more dangerous than Sawyer, and I didn't want to get into trouble.
Sawyer had at least kept me alive. Baxter wouldn't.
So I was just counting the days, wondering when I could finally ask him for something big.
But I still couldn't figure out what I could ask for that would secure my future.
At the same time, I was wasting time trying to get information on Baxter and Madeline.
I mean, they were living like a happy family, but there was no way, absolutely no way, Madeline could stay hidden here forever.
I knew her wolf had woken up last time, even though they weren't saying anything to the humans right now.
But I'd seen reports of humans getting agitated and questioning why the researcher had stayed behind last time because her wolf had awakened and now was back as if her wolf is gone again.
So how was she here now without anyone mentioning the wolf?
If word of that started spreading, this couple would probably have to go back home anyway.
Maybe I could wait until then, but for how long?
I was worried my father would run out of food soon.
I had gone out for an afternoon jog.
It wasn't like I had much else going on in my life anyway.
As I followed my usual route through the woods, I heard a strange sound near one of the trees. It sounded like someone groaning in pain.
The song in my ear was changing at that moment, leaving a brief stretch of silence between tracks. Then the next song started.
The sound had stopped, but it stayed in my mind.
Someone was in pain.
I pulled the headphones from my ears and looked around, trying to figure out where the sound had come from.
"Is anybody there?" I called out.
It hadn't sounded like someone calling for help. It was a man's voice, like he was in pain but wasn't actually trying to get anyone's attention.
