Livia:
He had once risked his life and come to my apartment without caring what might happen, just to pretend to be my boy toy.
He could have gotten caught that night. The guards could have suspected him or even arrested him.
But he'd taken that risk anyway.
And I had made fun of him that night.
I remembered that.
Maybe he remembered it too, because if I pieced everything together, his behavior toward me had started changing around that time.
He remembered everything that had happened, but maybe he didn't know why I'd made fun of him that night.
Because I'd gotten carried away.
While we were pretending, I had started enjoying it, and that embarrassed me.
My fight-or-flight response had kicked in.
I didn't want him to suspect that I was enjoying it too much, so I started babbling nonsense.
Somewhere in the middle of it, I started insulting him.
I knew that was wrong.
But I hadn't insulted him because I disliked him or thought he was beneath me.
"Do you like her?"
I didn't know why, but the question slipped past my lips.
Daniel immediately slowed down and turned his head toward me.
"Are you crying?" he asked.
I looked out the window.
For that brief second, when he asked if I was crying, he sounded like the old Daniel again, and that completely broke me.
The problem was, I knew I'd been rude to him the last time.
But I'd had good reasons.
I lived alone with my mother, a woman who was also a gray wolf.
No matter how much I might have wanted to, I couldn't let myself think about being with Daniel that way.
He was too innocent, too gentle.
For a monster like me, I needed someone powerful and monstrous enough to handle me.
Someone who, if my gray wolf ever lost control and attacked, wouldn't hesitate to stab me to force me away and defend himself.
But Daniel would never do that.
He would let me tear him apart before he ever hurt me, and I didn't want that.
"You didn't answer my question," I repeated. "Do you like her?" I asked again, my fist clenching beside me.
"Well, she'll be the first one I tell, not you."
His voice had gone cold again.
Then the car came to a stop, and I was shocked to realize we'd already arrived at my place.
"If you could please hurry up, I have to go home and work on some files," Daniel said, making me snap my head toward him.
He was in such a hurry to get me out of his car, yet he couldn't spare even two minutes to talk to me.
I just stared at him.
There was this smoldering look about him now.
