Ron:
I was in a lot of pain.
Ever since I had stepped onto Rosetta's property, I had been feeling strange, as though something was pulling me toward the main mansion.
I took a deep breath and clenched my fists.
Nala stood beside me, trying to comfort me.
Madeline had sped away, and we couldn't stop her.
I knew she just wanted to be with her daughter, so stopping her wouldn't have made any difference.
Once Madeline made up her mind, she always followed through.
But there was more to it than that.
As we stood in the watchtower, I kept looking around until my eyes landed on one of the windows.
Instantly, my heart dropped into my stomach.
It was obvious who it was.
Lady Eugenia.
"There she is," I said, pointing towards the window.
Nala quickly looked up, and she looked just as shocked.
Lady Eugenia had only appeared at the window for a few seconds, but that was enough for us to realise she was hiding there.
My eyes met Nala's, and it was as though she immediately understood what was really bothering me.
"Why is she hiding there?" Nala wondered before I could.
I clenched my jaw, still confused, but anyone supporting Eugenia wasn't on our side.
"You said your friend could be trusted," I said, trying to steady myself as I stood straight, watching Nala's confused expression.
"I know she can be,” she replied.
“You know, we've been looking for Lady Eugenia everywhere. If anyone knows about Bodhi, it's her. But your friend has been hiding her here. Please tell me your friend doesn't have an ulterior motive behind the image of a good woman she has presented to us," I hissed, watching Nala for an explanation.
But I could tell she had none.
Either she was really good at lying, or she was just as clueless as the rest of us.
I sprinted ahead with Nala trailing behind me.
She called after me, still trying to stop me.
I just didn't understand how she wasn't angry already.
Probably because it wasn't about someone she loved.
Lady Eugenia had caused pain to me, to my innocent Yuvonne.
She was the reason I couldn't even be with her.
Anger flared through me, and I ignored Nala's calls, heading straight towards the mansion while Rosetta still had the crowd gathered around her.
As soon as I slipped inside, I noticed the first floor was eerily empty.
My eyes drifted to the basement, then to the second floor.
I had seen Lady Eugenia on the second floor, but something made me want to explore the basement instead.
"Let's go," Nala urged now that we were already inside.
I started moving towards the room where I had heard the whimper.
It had been so faint that, at first, I wasn't even sure I'd really heard it.
In fact, even as I stood outside the room, I didn't hear another whimper.
But my heart had started pounding in my temples.
My breathing turned erratic too.
Nala came right behind me, but I ignored her.
My attention remained fixed on the door and whoever was behind it.
Then, very slowly and with deliberate movements, I opened the door.
I braced myself, making sure no one was hiding behind it, waiting for someone to open the door so they could attack.
There could have been any kind of monster lurking inside.
But no.
That wasn't it.
I gasped and grabbed the doorframe to keep myself from collapsing.
"What is it?" Nala called as she approached me.
Then she yelped and clapped a hand over her mouth to silence herself.
"Yuvonne," I whispered, saying her name in a way I never thought I would.
She was sitting on the bed, staring back at me with the same shock that was written across my face.
