Tonight
Amber POV
It took less than twenty-four hours for the accused families to fight back.
I wasn’t surprised.
People with that much money didn’t quietly accept being called murderers.
They hired lawyers.
Public-relations firms.
Digital-forensics experts.
And, apparently, anyone willing to stand in front of a camera and say the words artificial intelligence often enough to create doubt.
The first statement came from one of the families whose private aircraft appeared repeatedly in the island owner’s records.
They claimed the footage showed safari expeditions.
Not human hunts. 1
According to them, the videos had been deliberately edited to remove context.
The weapons?
For animals.
The armed groups?
Safari parties.
The payments to the island owner?
Private hunting fees.
The people running through the forest?
That footage, they claimed, wasn’t real.
Al-generated.
Within hours, the others followed.
Different lawyers.
Different families.
Almost identical explanations.
Some admitted visiting the island but denied knowing anything about people being hunted there.
Others claimed they had never visited at all.
Several insisted their faces had been digitally inserted into the videos.

And then, somehow, they dragged me into it.
was sitting beside Jason in one of the military base conference rooms when the headline appeared.
AMBER ASHER CONSPIRED WITH ISLAND OWNER TO OBTAIN MULTIBILLION-DOLLAR PRIVATE ISLAND, FAMILIES CLAIM
I stared at it.
Then at Jason.
Then back at it.
“Seriously?”
Jason took the tablet.
His expression darkened.
“They’re saying you helped fabricate the evidence.”
I grabbed it back.
“They’re saying I orchestrated an international massacre to acquire real estate?”
Emory, sitting across from us, grimaced.
“Essentially.”
“While four months pregnant.”
“Apparently.”
“After getting trapped in a category-five hurricane.”
“Amber-”
“And apparently my master plan included almost getting shot, hiding underground for three days, and trusting helicopters to reach us before somebody blew up another section of the island.”
Jason leaned back.
“When you say it like that, it doesn’t sound like a particularly good plan.”
“Because it wasn’t my plan!”
“I know.”
I stood.
“No.” 2
Jason recognized that tone.
“Amber.”
“No. I’m answering this.”
The reporters were still gathered outside the military base.

I didn’t organize a press conference.
Nidn’t need one.
I walked outside.
Jason came with me, as did Mr. Stait and several officers.
The shouting started immediately.
“Mrs. Sun!” 1
“Did you know the island owner before the competition?”
“Did you make an agreement with him?”
“Were the videos manipulated?”
“Did you know you would inherit the island?”
I stopped in front of the microphones.
“No.” 2
The questions stopped for approximately half a second.
Then started again.
I raised my hand.
“You want my response? Fine.”
The reporters quieted.
“I had never met that man before arriving on his island.”
Cameras flashed.
“I did not know I would inherit anything. I didn’t ask for the island, and frankly, when I discovered I had inherited it, my first reaction was to try to give it away.”
A few reporters laughed.
I didn’t.
“As for the accusations that I somehow colluded with him…”
I looked directly at the cameras.
“I was trapped on that island too.”
The crowd became quieter.
“People died around us. Command centers exploded. Armed men were killing participants. A false evacuation order directed survivors toward a beach where people were waiting to shoot them.”
I placed a hand over my stomach.
“I spent three days underground during a category-five hurricane while pregnant.”

Jason stepped slightly closer to me.
My husband was there.”
I pointed toward the military base behind us.
“Soldiers from multiple countries were there. Survivors from families I had never met were there. Kidnapping victims were found beneath that Island.”
I shook my head.
“So if someone’s defense is that I somehow orchestrated all of that because I wanted an island, they are welcome to make that argument in court.”
One reporter shouted, “What about claims that the footage is AI-generated?”
I looked at him.
“Then investigate it.”
That seemed to surprise everyone.
“Don’t believe me because I’m Amber Asher. Don’t believe the accused families because they’re wealthy. Examine the original recordings. Examine the cameras. Examine the financial transactions. Interview the survivors.”
I paused.
“Evidence doesn’t need popularity.”
Another reporter shouted, “Will you keep the island?”
“Legally, I don’t have much choice at the moment.”
That caused another wave of questions.
I turned around.
I’d said enough.
Let the investigators do the rest.
When I returned inside, Emory was waiting.
“That went well.”
“I feel better.”
