Allowed
Amber POV
I was still glaring at the map, trying to calculate how many kilometers of jungle stood between me and the command center, when someone suddenly grabbed my waist.
Before I could react, Jason kissed me.
Hard.
The entire world disappeared for a few seconds.
Then, just as quickly as he had appeared, he let go and sprinted away.
It took my brain a solid three seconds to process what had just happened.
“Did-”
“Did he just-”
“Was that allowed?”
The soldiers from Sum and River City exploded into whistles and cheers.
“GO, JASON!”
“THAT’S OUR GUIDE!”
“SHE’S GOING TO KILL HIM LATER!”
I stood there, completely frozen.
Then reality returned.
“Oh, he’s dead.”
Jasmine burst out laughing.
Daniel nearly dropped his backpack.
Noah, somehow, looked disappointed.
“I thought she’d punch him.”
“I was considering it,” I admitted.
1
Jasmine immediately stepped to my left, while Noah moved to my right and Daniel positioned himself behind me.
Without saying a word, they placed me in the middle of their group.
“Protection detail activated,” Daniel announced.
“Protection from enemy countries?” I asked.
Jasmine smirked.
“No. Protection from your husband.”
I rolled my eyes just as the other countries began organizing themselves.

Unlike River City, they immediately separated into their four individual teams and headed toward different parts of the island.
No communication.
No coordination.
No cooperation.
Exactly what Mr. Stait had expected. 1
Then I saw him.
Alexander Vincent.
He stood at the edge of the clearing, his team already waiting for him.
He wasn’t looking at the map.
He wasn’t looking at the jungle.
He was looking straight at me.
Our eyes met across the crowd.
Then he smiled.
It wasn’t a friendly smile.
It wasn’t even an arrogant smile.
There was something deeply wrong about it.
As if he knew something I didn’t.
As if the competition itself wasn’t the reason he was there.
A chill ran down my spine.
Without saying a word, Alexander turned around and led his team into the forest.
I shuddered.
Jasmine immediately noticed.
“What?”
I kept my eyes on the trees where Alexander had disappeared.
“His smile.”
Daniel frowned.
“What about it?”
“It looked wrong.”
Noah followed my gaze into the jungle.
For the first time since I had met him, he looked genuinely concerned.

“Then let’s make sure he never gets close enough for you to see it again.’
Nook a deep breath and forced myself to focus.
Fear could wait.
Planning couldn’t.
I immediately turned toward the leaders of the other three River City teams.
“New orders.”
All four teams looked at me.
“We stay together.”
One of the offense specialists frowned.
“The command centers are in different directions.”
“Not for now.”
Jasmine crossed her arms.
“You think something’s wrong?”
I looked back toward the beach.
“I think everyone assumes that the competition starts once we reach the command centers.”
Daniel adjusted his backpack.
“And you don’t.”
I shook my head.
“No.”
I looked at the dozens of footprints already disappearing into the jungle.
“I think the competition started the moment our feet touched this island.”
The four team leaders exchanged glances.
Even Emory seemed surprised.
“You think people are already moving toward the enemy flags?”
“I think the smart ones are.”
Without wasting another second, I sat on the ground and emptied my backpack.
Jasmine blinked.
“What are you doing?”
“Improvising.”
Food.

Rope.
Batteries.
Emergency radio.
Flashlight.
Metal wire.
Perfect.
Ten minutes later, after combining half the electronics with my phone, I managed to create a crude signal
enhancer.
Daniel stared at the device in my hands.
“Did you just build military equipment with camping supplies?”
“Probably.”
“Should I be impressed or terrified?”
“Both.”
Noah looked up from the map.
“Can it connect to the satellite feed?”
I smiled.
“Already did.”
The image on my phone flickered before stabilizing.
A rough satellite view of the island appeared on the screen.
Gasps spread through the group.
Jasmine crouched beside me.
“You’re kidding.”
I zoomed in, identifying rivers, cliffs, and elevation changes.
“Nope.”
One of the team leaders frowned.
“How did you even think of doing that?”
I shrugged.
“Pregnancy gives you strange hobbies.”
Daniel laughed.
“Your hobbies are terrifying.”
I ignored him and focused on the map.

Most of the teams had already spread out.
ncluding Sum.
Including Jason.
I smiled to myself.
My dear husband clearly believed that the competition began at the command center.
Poor man.
He had married me and still underestimated my paranoia.
I stood up.
“All right.”
Sixteen people immediately looked at me.
“We move now.”
Emory frowned.
“Already?”
“Already.”
I pointed toward the northeast section of the jungle.
“Our command center is there.”
One of the soldiers adjusted his backpack.
“And if we run into another team?”
I smiled.
“Then we’ll know that I was right.”
Jasmine grinned.
“I like this plan.”
Noah nodded.
Daniel sighed dramatically.
“I miss civilization already.”
The sixteen of us stepped into the jungle together.
Behind us, the beach disappeared.
Ahead of us, dense trees blocked the sunlight.
Somewhere inside that forest, Jason was marching toward his own command center, completely unaware that his wife had started playing the game hours before everyone else.
And somehow, I couldn’t shake the feeling that Alexander Vincent had done exactly the same.

The competition had begun.
at the command centers.
Not when the flags were hidden.
Not tomorrow.
It had begun the second we stepped off the plane.
And I intended to prove it.

Eight hours.
Eight entire hours and seven short breaks later, the four River City teams finally reached the point where their paths separated.
A massive crossroads stood in the middle of the jungle, with four different trails leading toward the command centers assigned to each team.
The moment we stopped, the exhaustion hit everyone at once.
One of the team leaders unfolded his map.
“Team One goes north.”
“Team Two, east.”
“Team Four, southwest.”
I looked down at my own route and immediately regretted every decision that had led me there.
Daniel leaned over my shoulder.
