So long ago

Amber POV

Jason and I still hadn’t decided whether the anonymous messages were helping us or manipulating us.

Every time my phone vibrated, my heart skipped a beat.

On one hand, whoever was sending those messages had known things that shouldn’t have been public knowledge.

On the other hand, what if everything was a trap?

What if someone was trying to make us lower our guard?

What if they wanted us to feel safe, just long enough to take Alice and Alex away?

“You don’t trust them.”

Jason’s voice pulled me away from my thoughts.

I looked up from the kitchen table.

“Do you?”

He sighed and sat beside me.

“I don’t know.”

“That’s the problem.”

Neither of us knew whether we were being warned or manipulated.

And when children were involved, uncertainty was a luxury we couldn’t afford. 1

Before I could answer, the twins reminded me of their existence.

One moment I was sitting peacefully, the next I was running toward the bathroom.

Jason followed me, trying-and failing-to suppress a laugh.

“You’re laughing?”

“I’m laughing because if I don’t, you’ll kill me.”

I glared at him from the bathroom floor.

“Whoever said women enjoy pregnancy was trying to convince someone else to get pregnant.”

Jason crouched beside me, handing me a glass of water.

“You’re telling me growing two humans isn’t a magical experience?”

I narrowed my eyes.

“You try growing two humans and then we’ll talk.”

He wisely decided not to answer.

A few hours later, we were sitting in the ultrasound room.

Four months.

Past the first trimester.

According to the doctor, the most dangerous weeks had already passed.

That should have made me feel better.

Instead, it only gave me more things to worry about…

The doctor spread the cold gel across my stomach.

“Let’s see how the little ones are doing.”

Jason squeezed my hand.

The room filled with the sound of tiny heartbeats.

For a moment, every legal battle disappeared.

Every Vincent.

Every lawsuit.

Every secret.

There were only the babies.

The doctor smiled.

“They both look healthy.”

I immediately relaxed.

“No complications?”

“None that I can see.”

Jason visibly exhaled beside me.

“Can we know if they’re boys or girls?”

The doctor laughed.

“We can try.”

A few seconds later, she shook her head.

“They’re both facing the wrong direction.”

Jason blinked.

“Already stubborn?”

The doctor pointed at the screen.

“They’re keeping their backs turned.”

I couldn’t help laughing.

“They’re doing it on purpose.”

Jason placed his hand over mine.

“At least we know they’re healthy.”

For the first time in weeks, I allowed myself to smile without worrying about what tomorrow might bring.

The moment we left the hospital, my phone rang.

Pamela.

“Please tell me the babies are okay.”

“They’re perfect.”

“Good, because I have terrible news.”

My smile disappeared instantly.

“What happened?”

“Alexander Vincent filed an emergency petition.”

My stomach tightened.

“What does he want now?”

“He’s asking the court to move the DNA test forward.”

I stopped walking.

“Why?”

“He’s claiming that there’s no reason to wait another two weeks.”

Jason immediately noticed my expression.

“What is it?”

I put the call on speaker.

Pamela sighed.

“His lawyers are arguing that delaying the test is causing unnecessary emotional harm to the children.”

I almost laughed.

“The irony is incredible.”

“I know.”

“We’re fighting it, but be prepared.”

After ending the call, we stood in silence in the parking lot.

Marcus called less than an hour later.

“I can take over the case.”

Jason smiled slightly.

legal counset?”

“Officially.”

I looked at Marcus through the video call.

“You’d do that?”

He shrugged.

“You’re family.”

I looked at Jason, then back at Marcus.

“No.”

Marcus frowned.

“No?”

I shook my head.

“I’m taking charge.”

Jason looked surprised.

“Amber-”

“No one knows this case better than I do.”

“No one knows our children better than I do.”

Marcus studied my face for a few seconds before smiling.

“I was hoping you’d say that.”

That evening, another problem exploded online.

A video filmed by one of Alice’s classmates had gone viral.

The clip showed several children sitting in the school courtyard.

A little boy asked, “Alice, if the Vincents are your family, would you go live with them?”

Alice looked genuinely confused.

“They’re not my family.”

The boy insisted.

“But what if they are?”

Alice crossed her arms.

“My family is Mama and Dad.”

“And Grandma and Grandpa Sun.”

“And Grandpa Asher.”

And Iris and Rose.”

The child filming laughed.

“That’s a lot of people.”

Alice nodded proudly.

“Because families are big.”

The boy asked another question.

“But what if the court says they’re your family?”

Alice shook her head.

“Amber is the one who loves me.”

“She’s the one who takes care of me.”

“She’s the one who teaches me things.”

“Like how to be brave.”

“And how to feel safe.”

The courtyard had become completely silent.

“They’re my family.”

“Now I’m going to be the best big sister in the world.”

She puffed out her chest proudly.

“And I’m mad that they’re trying to take me away from my family.”

The little boy asked why.

Alice thought for a moment.

“Because I’ve been with Dad and Alex since before I can remember.”

“Well, Amber and Grandpa Asher and Iris and Rose arrived later…”

She frowned, trying to calculate time.

“…but that was so long ago that I barely remember.”

The video ended there.

I sat on the couch, tears running down my face.

Jason silently wiped his own eyes.

Children had a way of simplifying things adults spent years complicating.

Blood.

heritance.

None of it mattered to Alice.

In her mind, family was simple.

Family was the people who loved you.

The people who kept you safe.

The people who stayed.

And as I looked at my growing stomach, at Jason beside me, and at Alice laughing upstairs with Alex, Iris, and Rose…

I promised myself that no court, no secret, and no Vincent would ever take that away from them.

A lie

Amber POV

I should have blocked the number the moment I saw it.

Unknown.

International.

Encrypted.

Instead, against my better judgment, I answered.

“Hello?”

For a few seconds, there was only silence.

Then a man’s voice.

“Amber.”

Every muscle in my body tensed.

Alexander Vincent.

1

I immediately stood up from my desk and walked out onto the balcony, making sure Alice and Alex couldn’t hear

“What do you want?”

His voice remained infuriatingly calm.

“I thought you deserved to know that I have evidence.”

I gripped the phone tighter.

“Evidence of what?”

“That Alice and Alex are my brother’s children.”

My heart nearly stopped.

“The Vincent family wants them back.”

I forced myself to breathe.

“They are not your brother’s children.”

Alexander ignored me.

“As their uncle, I have a stronger claim than Jason.”

“Jason is their cousin.”

“I am their blood.”

I laughed bitterly.

“Blood?”

“You don’t know those children.”

(ou don’t know Alice’s favorite bedtime story.”

“You don’t know that Alex pretends not to be afraid because he thinks protecting his sisters is his job.”

“You don’t know them.”

He remained silent for a moment.

Then he said quietly,

“That can change.”

I almost threw the phone across the balcony.

“The children are not your brother’s.”

“And you need to stop harassing my family.”

His tone softened.

“Amber, you could stop all of this.”

I froze.

“What are you talking about?”

“You know exactly what I mean.”

“No more hearings.”

“No more DNA tests.”

“No more lawyers.”

He paused.

“I only need heirs.”

The words made my stomach turn.

“If you agree to be with me…”

“…if you agree to have my children…”

“…I’ll let all of this go.

For a moment, I genuinely couldn’t speak.

He wasn’t negotiating custody.

He was bargaining with children.

With my children.

“You are insane.”

“I love Jason.”

“I love our children.”

And even if I had never met Jason…”

And

“I would rather die than belong to you.”

For the first time, his voice became cold.

“You say that now.”

I hung up before he could finish.

My hands were shaking so badly that I nearly dropped the phone.

A few seconds later, Jason stepped onto the balcony.

“Was it him?”

I nodded.
