Amber POV
Alex had left us a trail.
Now it was our turn to follow it.
Only four people knew where that trail ended.
Jason.
Marcus.
Pamela.

And me.
No one else.
Not the military.
Not the police.
Not Emory.
Not even our parents.

The little blinking signal on my laptop pointed to a tiny abandoned island off the coast of Sum, an island everyone believed had been deserted decades ago because of the poisonous gases that seeped from the old mines.
Jason folded the map and looked at the three of us.
“We’re not telling anyone.”
Marcus nodded immediately.
“I agree.”
Pamela looked surprised.
“Not even Emory?”
Jason slowly shook his head.
“No.”
“The fewer people who know where Alex is, the safer he is.”
He looked at each of us.
“We already know Sun Corporation was compromised.”
“We know investors were compromised.”
“We’ve had people inside our own companies feeding information to the Vincents.”
He paused.
“I’m done taking chances.”

No one argued.
As much as it hurt to leave Emory out of this….
Jason was right.
If the kidnappers somehow learned we had found the island…
Alex would disappear before we ever got there.
I looked down at my backpack.
“Then let’s prepare.”
Jason nodded.
“The island is full of toxic fumes.”
“We’ll need respirators.”
Within minutes we were searching through the castle’s emergency storage.
Industrial smoke masks.
Portable oxygen filters.
Flashlights.
Ropes.
Medical kits.
Everything we could possibly need.
As I finished packing my backpack, I stopped in front of the small refrigerator Emory had been using while developing Jason’s antidote.
There was still one vial left.
I stared at it for a few seconds before carefully placing it inside a protective case.
Jason noticed.
“You think they drugged Alex.”
“I don’t know.”
I zipped the bag closed.
“But if they did…”
“We’re not arriving empty-handed.”
Jason didn’t object.
Instead, he quietly added a second medical kit to his own backpack.
Meanwhile, Pamela had spread half the contents of the castle’s storage room across the dining table.
Portable drones.

Signal repeaters.
Miniature cameras.
Fiber optic cables.
Electronic lock picks.
She smiled to herself.
“If we’re rescuing a six-year-old hacker…”
“We’d better think like one.”
While digging through another old storage chest, she suddenly froze.
“…Amber?”
“What?”
“You’ve been hiding things.”
She carefully lifted a folded piece of black fabric.
At first glance it looked like an ordinary jacket.
Until she unfolded it.
Tiny metallic fibers shimmered beneath the lights.
Pamela’s eyes widened.
“No way…”
Marcus stepped beside her.
“What is it?”
She examined the seams.
The hidden electronics.
The woven material.
Then looked up.
“I think…”
“…it’s a cloaking device.”
Silence.
She pressed a tiny switch hidden beneath the collar.
The fabric shimmered.
For a brief second it almost disappeared against the wall behind it.
Marcus blinked.

bends light.”
Pamela looked amazed.
“And according to these sensors…”
“It also masks body heat and motion signatures.”
Jason stared at it for several seconds.
Then quietly said,
“I’ll go alone.’
I immediately looked at him.
“No.”
He didn’t even glance in my direction.
“We only have one.”
“I’ll go inside.”
“The rest of you stay outside.”
I stepped directly in front of him.
“No.”
“Amber…”
“No.”
“I am not staying behind while you rescue our son.”
Jason sighed.
“I’m trying to keep you safe.”
“And I’m trying to make sure both of you come home.”
Marcus folded his arms.
“I’m with Amber.”
