Not going anywhere
Amber POV
It was supposed to be a quick look.
Just one glance inside.
Then I would run back to the castle.
Instead…
The moment I stepped through the doorway, the heavy stone door slammed shut behind me.
I spun around.
“No…”
I pushed against it.
Nothing.
I searched for a handle.
A latch.
A lever.
Anything.
There wasn’t one.
“Seriously?”
I sighed.
“Of course.”
I pulled out my phone and switched on the flashlight.
The narrow beam barely pierced the darkness.
The air inside felt stale, humid, and impossibly old.
The first breath made me cough.
Dust.
Everywhere.
I pulled the collar of my shirt over my mouth and nose before taking another cautious step.
Each footfall sent another cloud of dust swirling into the air.
Whatever this place was…
No one had entered it for a very long time.
The further I walked…

Not go to wher
The more my flashlight revealed.
Then I stopped.
My eyes widened.
“…No way.”
Jewelry.
Everywhere.
Gold necklaces draped across ancient wooden tables.
Bracelets spilling out of broken chests.
Rings scattered across the floor like pebbles.
Pearls.
Gemstones.
Crowns.
Tiaras.
Silver cups.
Golden plates.
The walls themselves seemed decorated with precious metals. 1
It looked exactly how every story described a dragon’s hoard. 1
I slowly turned in a circle.
How…
How had no one found this?
The entrance hadn’t even been locked.
I had simply pushed the door open.
It made no sense.
Curiosity completely took over.
“Oh…”
I picked up an old golden crown and carefully placed it on my head.
I laughed quietly.
“It actually fits.”
Immediately I thought of the children.
Alice would love one.

Rose too.
Alex would pretend he didn’t care before secretly trying it on.
And Jason…
He’d probably roll his eyes.
I smiled.
I opened my bag.
One small crown.
Two delicate tiaras.
A tiny circlet that looked perfect for Iris.
Another simple crown that would probably fit Jason.
Bracelets.
Necklaces.
Earrings.
A handful of rings.
I filled my bag until it became surprisingly heavy. 1
Then I looked around.
It didn’t even seem like I had taken anything.
There was simply…
Too much treasure. 1
I carefully picked up one last bracelet.
Balanced everything in my arms.
Then walked back toward the entrance.
“…Now.”
“The difficult part.”
I leaned backward against the stone door.
The instant my weight touched it…
The door swung open.
I yelped.
My feet slipped.
The bag flew from my hands.

I braced for the floor.
mstead…
Strong arms caught me.
Before I could even open my eyes, a familiar voice reached my ears.
“There you are.”
His voice cracked with relief.
“I was worried sick.”
I looked up.
Jason.
Without thinking, I threw my arms around his neck.
The crown was still sitting crookedly on my head.
I didn’t care.
“I’m sorry.”
“I’m so sorry.”
“I wasn’t planning to stay.”
“My car broke down.”
“I thought it would be a shortcut.”
“I found the door.”
“I just wanted one look.”
Jason hugged me even tighter.
“No.”
“I’m sorry.”
“I should never have let you leave alone.”
“I’m sorry.”
“I’m so, so sorry.”
We kept apologizing over each other until neither of us knew who was apologizing anymore.
Finally…
Someone loudly cleared his throat.
Emory.
He looked between us before shaking his head dramatically.

“So…”
He pointed toward my bag overflowing with treasure.
“Amber became so obsessed with making Jason healthy…”
“…that the moment he recovered, she decided to celebrate with a shopping spree?”
I looked down at the jewels scattered around us.
“…It does look bad.”
Emory grinned.
“It looks expensive.”
I smiled sheepishly.
Without saying a word, I reached into my bag and pulled out a beautifully crafted silver-and-gold bracelet.
I held it out toward him.
Emory blinked.
“For me?”
I nodded.
He accepted it carefully before pretending to look offended.
“I want the record to show…”
“…that I am deeply offended by this obvious attempt at bribery.”
He admired the bracelet in the light.
“…I’ll keep it.”
“I don’t think I’m offended enough to give it back.”
Jason actually laughed.
The sound filled the tunnel.
I had missed that laugh.
More than I realized.
Once we’d gathered everything that had fallen onto the ground, the three of us turned back toward the hidden chamber.
Jason pushed against the stone door.
Nothing.
Emory tried.
Still nothing.
Even together, the three of us couldn’t move it.

Not going anywhere
The door refused to budge.
was as though…
It had never opened at all.
Jason frowned.
“Interesting.”
I looked at the ancient stone thoughtfully.
“So…”
“It only opens from the inside.” 1
None of us had an answer.
After one last look at the mysterious doorway, we left the mine together.
Whatever secrets the hidden treasure chamber still held…
They weren’t going anywhere.
And for the first time in weeks…
Neither was Jason.

A teenage girl’s jealousy
Amber POV
By the time the three of us reached the castle, the sun had already begun to set.
I was still carrying the bag from the hidden chamber, now considerably heavier than when I had entered the mine..
Jason refused to let go of my hand the entire Walk back.
Not that I minded.
After everything that had happened over the last few weeks, I wasn’t planning on letting go either.
The moment we entered the great hall, Mrs. Sun and Pamela were already waiting for us.
Mrs. Sun rushed straight to Jason.
Without saying a word, she cupped his face with both hands before pulling him into a tight hug.
“My boy…”
“You scared all of us.”
Jason hugged her back.
“I’m sorry, Grandma.’
“I’ll make it up to everyone.”
She smacked his shoulder lightly.
“You certainly will.”
Pamela wasn’t nearly as gentle.
She walked up to him, crossed her arms, and stared.
Jason sighed.
“I deserve it.”
“You do.”
She nodded.
“But you’re forgiven.”
Then, before anyone could react, she hugged him.
“We’re just happy you’re back.”
For a few precious moments, the castle felt peaceful again.
Then Pamela ruined it.
“…Unfortunately.”
She lifted her tablet.

“The internet didn’t get the memo.”
Jason groaned.
“Now what?”
Pamela handed the tablet to me.
A headline filled the screen.
CLOSE FRIEND OF THE SUN COUPLE CONFIRMS SECRET DIVORCE.
I frowned and began reading aloud.
“”‘According to a close friend of Amber Asher and Jason Sun, the couple has already begun divorce proceedings after Amber’s repeated infidelities.””
Jason rolled his eyes.
I continued. 1

“The couple allegedly agreed to keep the separation secret until the twins are born to avoid damaging Phoenix Ashes, Asher Corporation, and Sun Corporation.””
I snorted.
“Creative.”
Mrs. Sun looked offended.
“It gets worse.”
Pamela pointed lower.
There it was.
A picture.
Monica leaving Jason’s office on the day everything had happened.
