“So has Amber.”
pointed toward Alice.
“So has Alice.”
Alex raised his own hand.
“And me.”
Rose lifted hers too.
“Me too.”
Iris sighed dramatically before raising hers as well.
The rest of the room laughed.
Jason smiled.
“See?”
“The interesting people usually find each other.”
The children looked around the room.
Several smiled shyly at one another.
The Stone heir slowly raised his hand again.
Jason nodded toward him.
“Yes?”
The boy looked genuinely thoughtful.
“So…”
He hesitated.
“Do you mean we should find a wife?”
The room fell silent for a second.
Then I burst out laughing.
Jason looked at the boy, then at me, clearly trying very hard not to laugh himself.
The Stone heir frowned.
“What?”
I wiped a tear from my eye.
“Well…”
I smiled warmly at him.
“That works too.”

The children giggled.
But,” I continued, “it’s much better to start as friends.”
The boy tilted his head.
“Why?”
“Because friendship lets you discover who à person really is.”
I reached for Jason’s hand, intertwining our fingers.
“When Jason and I first met, we weren’t thinking about marriage.’
I smiled at my husband.
“We became partners because we first learned we could trust each other.”
Jason nodded.
“A good partner is usually a very good friend first.”
I looked back at the children.
“So don’t rush.”
“Make friends.”
“Learn from each other.”
“Help each other.”
“And if one day one of those friendships becomes something more…”
I shrugged with a smile.
“That’s wonderful.”
“But friendship is the best foundation you can build.”
The Stone heir nodded seriously, as though committing every word to memory.
“So…”
He smiled sheepishly.
“I should probably learn to make friends before looking for a wife.”
The room erupted into laughter.
Jason chuckled.
“I think that’s an excellent plan.”
Several of the older children laughed and nodded in agreement.
One little girl whispered loudly enough for everyone to hear,
“My brother skipped the friendship part.”

Her older brother immediately turned bright red.
The entire room Taughed even harder.
One boy moved closer to another student who had been sitting alone.
Without saying a word.
Jason noticed.
So did I.
For a brief moment, I forgot about the emails hidden inside his jacket.
Forgot about Alexander Vincent.
Forgot about the treasure beneath the castle.
Watching those children connect…
Reminded me why we were fighting so hard to protect this place.
Then Jason gently squeezed my hand.
Just once.
A silent message.
We need to talk.
The warmth disappeared from my chest.
The emails were still there.
Waiting.
And somehow…
I knew whatever Jason had found was far worse than a few marriage proposals.
