Amber POV
The flight back to Sum should have been peaceful.
Should have.
Instead, I spent most of it staring at my phone.
Specifically at a video interview that had gone viral while we were still in the air.
Victoria.
Jason’s former fiancée.
I had almost forgotten she existed.
Almost.
Apparently the media hadn’t.
She sat in a tasteful living room.
Perfect makeup.
Perfect posture.
Perfect expression.
The image of concern.
The image of grace.
The image of a saint.
“I don’t think it’s my place to comment on Jason’s private life.”
That sentence alone told me she was absolutely going to comment on Jason’s private life.
The interviewer nodded sympathetically.
Victoria sighed.
“I will only say that yes, Jason has faced some difficulties concerning having children.”
My grip tightened around the phone.
She continued.
“But I hope everyone gives him privacy while he faces this particular battle.”
I nearly laughed.
Not because it was funny.
Because it was infuriating.
It was the perfect statement.

Compassionate.
concerned.
Supportive.
And completely darnaging.
The interviewer looked moved.
Victoria lowered her eyes.
“I think Amber must really love him.”
I groaned.
There it was.
The killing blow.
The part she actually wanted people to remember.
“To place her entire family line at risk of disappearing…”
A pause.
“That is true devotion.”
I closed the video.
Slowly.
Carefully.
Because if I watched one more second, I might throw my phone through the aircraft window.
Jason glanced over.
“Bad?”
I handed him the phone.
His expression became increasingly blank the longer he watched.
That was somehow worse than anger.
When the video ended, he handed the phone back.
“I see.”
I stared at him.
“That’s all?”
Jason shrugged.
“What would you like me to say?”
A pause.

“She’s manipulating public opinion.”
Exactly.
I stood up. 1
Jason immediately became suspicious.
“What are you doing?”
I grabbed my tablet.
“Ending this.”
Twenty minutes later I was sitting in one of the private sections of the aircraft.
Camera positioned.
Lighting adjusted.
Hair acceptable.
Jason sat across from me watching quietly.
I pressed record.
And spoke.
“Hello everyone.”
No script.
No public relations team.
No prepared statement.
Just me.
“I’ve seen a lot of discussions lately regarding fertility, family lines, and personal worth.”
I paused.
Then continued.
“And honestly?”
A small smile.
“I think we’ve lost perspective.”
I leaned forward slightly.
“A person’s value does not depend on whether they can have children.”
The words came easily.
Because I meant every one of them.
“It depends on their character.”

“Their morals.”
Their kindness.”
“Their integrity.”
“The support they give their loved ones.”
“The person they choose to be.”
I thought about Jason.
About the man who sat with me through hospital stays.
The man who protected children who weren’t biologically his.
The man who spent years helping people who would never know his name.
“A person is not worth less because they cannot have children.”
A pause.
“Nor are they worth less if they simply choose not to.”
I sat back slightly.
“Jason and I recently underwent medical testing.”
That part was technically true.
“We had never done so before.”
Also true.
“And we will receive official results in approximately two weeks.”
A little lie.
One very necessary lie.
“Until then, I would ask everyone to stop treating fertility as a measure of someone’s worth.”
I smiled softly.
“Thank you.”
Then I ended the recording.
Uploaded it.
And immediately turned my phone off.
Because I didn’t want to see the comments.
Jason was staring at me.
“What?”
He looked amused.

“I thought you were going to announce the pregnancy.”
Every ounce of color left my face.
Immediately.
“No.”
Jason laughed.
“Amber.”
“No.”
“You’re going to have to tell people eventually.”
I pointed at him.
“Eventually.”
A pause.
