I showed him one headline.
His eyes widened.
Then he groaned.
The article claimed I was already pregnant.
Another claimed we were separating.
A third claimed we were secretly adopting triplets.
I shook my head.
“The internet is exhausting.”
Jason actually smiled.
For the first time in days.
A genuine smile.
And as the elevator doors opened, carrying us toward whatever answers awaited us, I squeezed his hand.
No matter what the results said.

No matter what the rumors claimed.
matter what the world thought.
We would face it together.
And for the first time since the story broke…
I think Jason finally believed that too.

Unexpected
Amber POV
If someone had told me a year ago that I would one day be sitting inside a fertility clinic with Jason Sun, I would have laughed in their face.
If they had told me that Jason would somehow be more embarrassed than Iwas?
I would have laughed even harder.
And yet there we were.
The nurse smiled politely.
“Mr. Sun, we’ll begin with a few standard tests.”
Jason nodded.
The nurse looked toward me.
“Mrs. Sun, you can wait in the consultation room if you’d like.”
“No.”
The answer came instantly.
Everyone looked at Jason.
Including me.
The nurse blinked.
“I’m sorry?”
Jason cleared his throat.
“She stays.”
The nurse looked confused.
I looked delighted.
Jason looked mortified. 1
My friend Michael looked like he was trying not to laugh.
“Jason.”
I raised an eyebrow.
“You know I’ve seen you bleeding, injured, half-conscious and covered in dirt.”
A pause.
“You draw the line at a fertility clinic?”
His expression became even redder.
“Amber.”

That only made me laugh.
Unfortunately for him, things became progressively worse.
The nurses asked questions.
Personal questions.
Very personal questions.
Questions that apparently existed solely to make Jason regret every decision that had led him here/
By the time they finished, his ears were bright red.
Mine probably weren’t much better.
Then came the sperm sample discussion.
I watched Jason freeze.
Completely.
Absolutely.
Frozen.
The nurse smiled professionally.
“We’ll need a sample.”
Silence.
Jason looked at her.
Then at me.
Then at Michael.
Then back at me.
His expression suggested he would rather fight another assassination attempt.
“I see.”
His voice sounded strangled.
The nurse nodded.
“And Mrs. Sun can wait outside while–”
“No.”
Again.
Instantly.
The poor nurse looked completely confused now.
Jason took my hand.

unpacked
Firmly.
She’s staying
I laughed so hard I nearly fell out of my chair.
“Jason!”
He looked genuinely offended.
“I’m already here.”
A pause.
“You are not abandoning me.”
Michael actually walked out of the room.
Apparently to preserve what remained of his professionalism.
By the time the sample situation was resolved, both of us were bright red.
The nurses were trying very hard not to smile.
And I was never letting Jason live this down.
Ever.
Then it was my turn.
Ultrasound.
Bloodwork.
Hormone testing.
Medical history.
Jason accompanied me through every single step.
Which was oddly comforting.
The entire reason we had come was because of him.
Yet somehow he never once made it about himself.
When the ultrasound technician entered, Jason immediately moved beside me.
Holding my hand.
Watching the screen.
Listening carefully.
