Against all logic
Jason POV
I wasn’t entirely sure whether to be impressed or concerned.
Possibly both.
Actually, definitely both.
I stood beside Amber as my grandmother proudly guided us through the newest addition to our rapidly expanding lives.
The school.
Calling it a school felt inaccurate.
Calling it a small kingdom disguised as a school was probably more appropriate.
The building stretched across several acres between the castle grounds and the Sun estate.
Elegant stone towers rose above carefully landscaped gardens.
Large windows reflected the morning sunlight.
Decorative bridges connected different sections of the campus.
The resemblance was impossible to miss.
My grandmother had built a miniature version of Amber’s castle.
Not inspired by it.
Not similar to it.
A miniature replica.
The moment Amber realized it, she looked suspiciously emotional.
My grandmother pretended not to notice.
Everyone else pretended not to notice.
I pretended not to notice.
The children, meanwhile, were openly running wild.
“LOOK!”
Alice pointed excitedly toward one of the towers.
“That one is mine!”
“No it isn’t.”
Alex looked deeply offended.
“That’s the science tower.”
Alice crossed her arms.

“It can be both.”
Honestly, I admired her confidence.
Classes were scheduled to begin in three weeks.
Three weeks.
And somehow the entire facility was already operational.
Classrooms.
Libraries.
Laboratories.
Music rooms.
Art studios.
Sports facilities.
There was even an indoor equestrian training area.
Because apparently my grandmother believed moderation was for other people.
I watched her explaining future expansion plans to a group of administrators.
She looked happier than I had seen her in years.
More energetic.
More alive.
Driven.
The entire project seemed to have awakened something inside her.
Even Grandfather Sun looked surprised.
“I haven’t seen her like this since we were young.”
Mr. Asher nodded from beside him.
“She scares me.”
Grandfather laughed.
“Good.”
I couldn’t disagree.
The truly terrifying part came when we reached the nursery wing.
I stopped walking.
Amber stopped walking.
Mr. Asher stopped walking.

The entire group stopped walking.
There, proudly displayed before us, was a fully operational early childhood education center.
Complete.
Finished.
Ready.
There was only one problem.
No babies existed.
Not a single one.
I looked toward my grandmother.
She looked pleased with herself.
“Grandmother.”
“Yes?”
I pointed.
“We don’t have babies.”
She waved dismissively.
“Not yet.”
That answer did not help.
“Clara is due in three months.”
She said it as though that explained everything.
“Three months.”
A pause.
“I like being prepared.”
Mr. Asher nearly choked.
Amber covered her face.
I stared at the nursery.
It could easily accommodate forty children.
Possibly more.
My grandmother had planned for an army.
Not a baby.
“Alex and Iris helped.”

That somehow explained everything and nothing simultaneously.
this point I was no longer surprised when those two became involved in absurd projects.
The real surprise arrived shortly afterward.
It came in the form of Alice.
Who walked directly toward us carrying several printed pages.
She looked extremely proud of herself.
Which immediately made me nervous.
“Grandma!”
My grandmother smiled.
“Yes, darling?”
Alice handed over the papers.
“My future classmates.”
Silence.
My grandmother blinked.
Then blinked again.
Then began reading.
The smile slowly disappeared from her face.
That got everyone’s attention immediately.
“What’s wrong?”
Amber moved closer.
My grandmother simply handed over the papers.
I took them first.
And froze.
Names.
Lots of names.
Dozens of names.
All familiar.
Painfully familiar.
Children from major families across the continent.
Political families.

Business families.
Aristocratic families.
Future heirs.
Future leaders.
Future problems.
I looked at Alice.
She smiled innocently.
Which was always dangerous.
“Why do you have this?”
Alice beamed.
“Oh!”
As though it was obvious.
“I made a game.”
The adults exchanged confused looks.
“A game?”
Alice nodded enthusiastically.
