Mrs. Sun stepped inside.
She stopped immediately upon seeing us.
A knowing smile appeared on her face.
“Am I interrupting?”
“Yes,” Grandfather said immediately.
“No,” I said at the same time.
Mrs. Sun laughed.
“Good.”
She stepped fully into the room.
“The board is here.”
Grandfather blinked.
“The entire board?”
Mrs. Sun nodded.
“Every single one.”
A pause.
“They’ve been driving the doctors insane.”
That sounded exactly like the Asher board.
“They’ve been waiting for you to wake up.”
Grandfather looked genuinely surprised.
“All of them?”
Mrs. Sun smiled softly.
“They were worried.”
That made me smile.
Because unlike many corporations, the Asher board wasn’t made up of opportunists.
They were his friends.
People who had stood beside him for decades.
People who remembered the worst years.
The years when the company nearly collapsed.
The years when investors fled.
The years when everyone predicted failure.

And somehow…
They stayed.
Together we made our way toward the private conference room attached to the hospital wing.
Security followed discreetly behind us.
The moment the door opened, every person inside stood.
All twelve board members.
Men and women who had spent most of their lives building Asher Corp alongside my grandfather.
Several of them looked emotional.
One looked ready to cry.
Another immediately pointed at Grandfather.
“You idiot.”
The room burst into laughter.
Grandfather grinned.
“I missed you too.”
The atmosphere shifted instantly.
The tension dissolved.
Relief replaced it.
One of the older directors stepped forward.
“We thought we’d lost you.”
The room fell quiet.
For a moment nobody joked.
Nobody smiled.
Because they all knew how close it had been.
Grandfather’s expression softened.
“So did I.”
That earned him several disapproving looks.
Then one of the female directors turned toward me.
And suddenly every eye in the room followed.
I immediately became suspicious.
The woman smiled.

“Amber.”
“We need to talk about your performance.”
Definitely uh oh.
The room exploded into smiles.
“You’ve been incredible.”
Another director nodded.
“A menace.”
“Terrifying.”
“Unreasonably competent.”
“Exhausting.”
I blinked.
Were they complimenting me?
“I don’t know how Chairman Asher survived you.”
The room laughed again. 1
Then one of the oldest directors leaned back in his chair.
“We all wish our grandchildren were like her.”
Several heads nodded immediately.
Another director sighed dramatically.
“My grandson tried to microwave a spoon last week.”
The room erupted.
And for the first time since the poisoning…
For the first time since the Vincents entered our lives…
I saw my grandfather laugh.
A genuine laugh.
Surrounded by the people who had never abandoned him.
And suddenly, despite everything still waiting for us…
For the first time in weeks…
It felt like we might actually win.
