Refused

Sun did not argue.

He simply nodded.

And for the first time, I could clearly see it-

Where Jason got it from.

That same unshakable presence. 1

That same refusal to bend once a decision had been made.

That same quiet authority that did not need to be raised to be felt.

Mr. Sun straightened slightly, his gaze moving across the room, taking in every person present.

“If I am going to tell this story,” he said evenly, “I will do so uninterrupted.”

A pause.

“Are we clear?”

No one challenged him.

Then his eyes sharpened further.

“And any mention of my wife will not be logged anywhere.”

That drew a reaction.

Subtle-but there.

He turned his attention directly to Mr. Stait and Emory.

“I do not consent for this to be recorded.”

The air shifted again.

Not tension this time-

Control.

Emory glanced at John.

John hesitated for half a second, then reached forward and disabled the recording system on his desk.

The faint hum of surveillance equipment cut off.

“Understood,” John said.

Emory gave a short nod.

“No recording.”

Mr. Sun waited a moment longer, as if ensuring compliance was not just spoken-but real.

Only then did he turn back to Jason.

He looked less like a patriarch….

And more like a man about to reveal something that had been buried for far too long

Mr. Sun did not rush.

When he finally spoke, his voice carried the weight of years-of decisions made, of truths buried, of consequences that had never truly settled.

“Two days after Jason’s fourth birthday,” he began, “Samuel White called us.”

Jason did not move.

“He requested fifty million dollars,” Mr. Sun continued. “Claimed there was an emergency in his company. That he needed a loan to carry through.”

A pause.

“We refused.”

The words were simple. Final.

“We had not even been allowed to attend our grandson’s birthday.”

Something cold settled in my chest.

“There was no celebration for Jason,” Mr. Sun added. “His younger brother, Oscar, was ill, and his stepmother did not consider it appropriate to spend money on him.”

Jason’s hands tightened slowly.

“Three days later,” Mr. Sun continued, “we went to the White residence.”

Not invited.

Not expected.

“We intended to give Jason his gift ourselves.”

His gaze flickered briefly-past Jason, past all of us-as if he were seeing that moment again.

“Samuel informed us that Jason had been sent away.”

The room seemed to shrink.

“To live with distant relatives,” he said. “He claimed Jason had been behaving badly.”

Jason let out a slow, quiet breath.

“We did not believe him,” Mr. Sun said. “Not for a second.”

His voice hardened slightly.

“But no matter what we offered-money, contracts, influence-he refused to tell us where Jason was.”

Mrs. Sun, I realized, must have broken long before this moment.

“My wife…” he said carefully, respecting his own condition, “was relentless.”

There was something almost reverent in the way he said it.

“She searched everywhere. We contacted lawyers. Investigators. Anyone who could help.’

Abitter exhale.

“But technology was not what it is now.”

People could disappear.

Children could vanish.

“And someone made sure Jason did.”

The silence deepened.

“We terminated every agreement we had with the White family,” Mr. Sun continued. “Every investment. Every partnership.”

Jason’s eyes flickered.

“And yet,” Mr. Sun said, voice darkening, “Samuel’s companies continued to perform… adequately.”

That was wrong.

“By the time Jason’s fifth birthday arrived,” he went on, “we were on our way to confront Samuel again.”

Another pause.

“When we came across a crash site.”

I straightened unconsciously.

“A car had overturned,” Mr. Sun said. “We called for assistance immediately,”
