Amber POV

Emory rose from his chair with quiet certainty, the kind that did not ask for permission.

“Jason,” he said, his voice even but edged with purpose, “I think it is time to call your grandparents, don’t you?”.

The words settled over the room like a final piece placed on a board none of us had realized we were playing.

Jason did not answer immediately.

He went pale. Not dramatically, not in a way that would draw attention from anyone who did not know him-but I did. I saw the way the color drained from his face, the way his shoulders stilled, the way his eyes closed as if shutting out the present might give him space to understand the past.

Even with his eyes shut, I could see the movement beneath them. Quick. Restless. Searching. He was thinking- no, reliving-pulling apart memories he had once accepted and forcing them into a new shape. One that fit what we now knew.

I reached for his hand.

It was cold. Slightly damp.

Jason’s fingers tightened around mine, firm and deliberate. Not enough to hurt. Just enough to speak.

This matters.

This is hard.

Stay.

I stood, the legs of my chair scraping softly against the polished floor, the sound too loud in the stillness that had taken over the room. No one spoke. No one dared interrupt what was unfolding.

I stepped behind him and wrapped my arms around him, pressing myself lightly against his back. 1

For a heartbeat, he tensed. Reflex. Control. The instinct to stand alone in the face of anything that tried to reach him.

Then, slowly, I felt the resistance leave him.

His hands came up to mine, covering them, holding them there as though anchoring himself to something real, something present-something that would not disappear when the past grew too loud.

The room faded.

There was only the quiet weight of what had been said. What had not been said. What had been hidden for years and was now demanding to be seen.

Jason opened his eyes.

When he spoke, his voice was steady-not because it was easy, but because he had already made the decision to face it.

“I think you are right, Emory.”

He drew a slow breath.

“It is time for my grandparents to tell me exactly how they found me”

Jason did not hesitate.

There was no preparation, no careful phrasing, no attempt to soften what was coming. He simply reached for his phone, unlocked it, and called his grandfather.

Then he placed the call on speaker.

“Hello, son. Everything all right?”

Mr. Sun’s voice came through calm, curious-almost relaxed. The voice of a man who did not yet know the ground beneath him had shifted.

Jason did not match the tone.

“Actually, no,” he said. “Everything is not all right.”

A pause.

“When were you going to tell me that I was basically kidnapped instead of sent away to distant relatives like I was led to believe?”

I heard it.

The sharp intake of breath on the other end of the line.

The room went still again.

Even Emory did not move.

Jason had not eased into it. He had not given context. He had not warned him.

He had gone straight to the truth.

“Where are you, son?” Mr. Sun asked, his voice no longer relaxed. “This is not something that can be discussed over the phone.”

There was something else beneath it now.

Not just caution.

Resignation.

Jason let out a quiet, humorless breath.

“That’s the funny thing,” he said. “I’m currently assisting with the Becker and Vinny investigation.”

A beat.

“And my case seems to be related.”

Silence answered him this time.

Longer. Heavier.

“We cannot talk about this on the phone, Jason,” Mr. Sun said finally. “This is sensitive information.”

Jason’s hand tightened around the edge of the desk.
