A Woman Worth Billions Dated the Wrong Brother novel Chapter 167

A pause.

Then she added with even greater triumph-

“And everyone’s here.”

My chest tightened unexpectedly.

Warm.

Immediate.

“That is incredible, Iris,” I said softly.

She beamed.

“Do you want to see?”

“Yes,” I answered without hesitation. 1

She jumped from her chair so fast it nearly tipped over.

Alex abandoned the taco war immediately.

Alice followed.

Rose was already halfway around the table.

The children gathered around Iris as though she were about to reveal state secrets.

I looked at Jason.

He was watching them too.

Quiet.

Softened.

For one brief moment, with tacos, laughter, and children arguing over nonsense while celebrating letters-

The world felt healed.

As the meal came to an end, the table slowly settled.

The last tacos disappeared.

Drinks were refilled.

The children were still talking over one another about Iris’s reading progress and the great taco dispute as if both were matters of national importance.

Then Mrs. Sun set down her glass and smiled sweetly.

A dangerous smile. 1

“Children,” she said, “why don’t you all go play while we discuss boring grown-up things?”

Three small faces turned suspicious immediately.

“That means secrets,” Alice said.

“That means no,” Alex added.

Rose crossed her arms in solidarity.

I almost laughed.

For a moment, it looked as though negotiations might fail completely.

Then Iris stood. 1

Calm.

Certain.

Older than her years in the quietest ways.

“Come on,” she said. “We’re going to have fun.”

That got their attention.

“What kind of fun?” Alex asked.

“The fun kind,” Iris replied.

Apparently that was enough.

She gathered them with effortless authority and led them from the room, the others following after only minor protest.

As she passed me, I mouthed a silent thank you.

She smiled without slowing down.

Then the room became quieter.

Truly quieter.

The kind of silence that only comes when children leave and adults remember why they were waiting.

I turned back to the table.

My grandfather.

Mr. Sun.

Mrs. Sun.

Jason beside me.

All of them suddenly more serious.

I folded my hands in front of me.

“Okay,” I said.

I looked from one face to the next.

“Now tell us what it is the Vinny family did.”

silence after my question lasted only a moment.

Then Mr. Sun leaned back if his chair and let out a slow breath.

“The Vinny family moved first thing this morning.”

My grandfather’s expression darkened.

Mrs. Sun looked openly offended.
