The threan
“Since you already lost one,” I continued, “does that mean you’re down a honeymoon now?”
Sdence.
Then-
Emilian laughed.
Not amused.
Sharp.
Cold.
“There is no version of this where you leave,” he said.
I didn’t react.
Didn’t break eye contact.
Because that-
That told me everything.
He believed it.
Truly.
“I know you came alone,” he continued, his voice lowering. “You always do.””
Jason’s grip tightened.
Invisible.
Unseen.
Unaccounted for.
“You slipped out on your own,” Emilian went on. “No one knows where you are.
A beat.
“You’re isolated.”
Another beat.
“And when this ends…”
His gaze darkened.
“You’ll stay.”
Silence filled the room.
Heavy.
I let it stretch.
Let him sit in his certainty.

Almost pitying.
“That’s your third mistake.”
Jason shifted slightly behind me.
Closer.
Present.
Real.
I leaned just enough to the side-
not enough for the cameras to catch him-
but enough to feel him there.
And I spoke.
“You’ve been watching me for years, Emilian.”
A pause.
“But you never realized something very important.”
His expression tightened.
I tilted my head.
“I stopped being alone a long time ago.
Jason brushed his fingers against mine, a brief and deliberate signal.
I did not look at him or react, but I understood immediately.
Through the corner of my eye, I followed the direction of his movement without turning my head. At the far end of the room, there was a small door, barely noticeable and slightly ajar. The mist was thicker there, curling out steadily.
That was the source.
Of course it was.
Jason began to move away from me, step by step, carefully staying within the cameras’ blind spots we had already identified. Little by little, he disappeared from view.
He was hunting now.
Which meant I had to keep Emilian distracted.
I stepped closer to the camera and crossed my arms, as if bored.
Behind me, Jason vanished completely.

Emilian’s voice came again, smooth but edged with something sharper.
Tell me something, Amber.”
I tilted my head slightly. “What is it?”
“Where have you been staying these last few days?” he asked. “You disappeared. I could not find you.
I let out a soft laugh, light and dismissive.
“No,” I said. “It was not a new property.”
I smiled.
“It was Jason’s.”
I let his name linger intentionally.
“The location is not exactly a secret,” I added casually. “You probably just did not look hard enough.”
There was a pause.
Then a shift.
Subtle, but unmistakable.
Jealousy.
Perfect.
From the corner of my eye, I saw Jason reach the door. He pushed it open just enough to slip inside.
And then he was gone.
“You are lying,” Emilian said.
I shrugged lightly. “Am I?”
Another pause followed.
Then I heard it.
A sharp click.
Final.
The atmosphere in the room changed.
The mist thickened slightly, and the lights dimmed.
New screens flickered to life around me, showing different angles and feeds.
And then I saw them.
Three figures.
Bound.
Bruised.

the tria missing Buckers
Barely conscious.
The three missing Beckers.
Alive.
For now.
My jaw tightened, but I did not let it show.
Emilian was watching me closely.
“There is a puzzle,” he said calmly. “You will find it, and you will solve it.”
I said nothing, already scanning the room again.
“And if you fail,” he continued, “they die.”
He paused, then added softly, “And you will be the one responsible.”
I inhaled slowly, forcing myself to remain steady.
This was not about saving them.
Not for him.
This was about control.
About breaking me.
I stepped forward, my eyes moving across every detail in the room.
The cages.
The screens.
The stains on the floor.
The door Jason had disappeared through.
“There is always a pattern,” I murmured.
“There is,” Emilian agreed.
Of course there was.
Emilian did not create chaos.
He created systems.
Control.
Obsession.
Which meant the puzzle was not random.
It was personal.
I turned slowly, taking everything in again, searching for anything out of place.

Somewhere in this room-
hdden in plain sight-
was the answer.
I smiled faintly and looked straight at the camera.
“Alright,” I said.
“Let us play.”

Why should I care?
moved deeper into the room, forcing myself to ignore the screens for a moment.
The cages.
The men.
The threat.
All of it could wait.
This was a puzzle.
And Emilian never did anything without intention.
I slowed my steps and began to observe more carefully. What had looked like scattered debris at first glance began to form a pattern the longer I looked.
There were pieces everywhere.
Metal components.
Wires.
Joints.
Small mechanical parts.
Not random.
I crouched down and picked up one of the pieces. It was light, precise, and clearly manufactured with purpose.
Not scrap.
I turned it in my hand, my eyes narrowing slightly.
This felt familiar.
I stood and moved to another section, picking up a different piece. Then another.
A joint.
A wiring cluster.
| A partially assembled frame.
Then I noticed the papers.
I reached for them and unfolded one.
Schematics.
But incomplete.
I found another sheet a few steps away. Then another.
The instructions were not in one place. They were spread across the room, fragmented, as if someone had taken something whole and deliberately broken it apart.

This was not chaos.
This was disassembly.
My breath slowed.
I had seen this before.
Not here.
At the university.
At the competition.
The video Jason had shown me.
The robot.
The one Emilian had destroyed.
I straightened slightly.
“This isn’t just a puzzle,” I said calmly.
