Wrong
servants’ quarters were nothing like the rest of the estate.
No polished marble.
No warm lighting.
No elegance.
The hallway was narrow, the walls painted in a dull, peeling beige that looked like it hadn’t been touched in years. The lights above flickered faintly, casting uneven shadows that made the space feel even smaller.
The smell hit next.
Damp.
Closed air. 1
A faint mix of detergent and something older… like neglect.
Doors lined both sides of the corridor.
Identical.
Unmarked.
Each one slightly worn, edges chipped, handles dull from overuse.
No decorations.
No signs of life.
Not a home.
A holding space.
I pushed one of the doors open slowly.
And saw her.
The room was worse.
Small.
| Bare.
A single dim bulb hung from the ceiling, casting a weak yellow light that barely reached the corners.
No windows.
No ventilation.
Just a small metal shelf with a dented cup and nothing else.
Cold.
Empty.
Cruel.

She was curled on the floor.
Too small.
Too still.
Her body folded into itself like she was trying to disappear.
My chest tightened.
I stepped closer.
“Hey…”
Her eyes snapped open.
Fear. 1
Pure, raw fear.
Then confusion.
Then hope.
Behind her-
Another girl, dresses as a maid.
Hovering. 1
Watching.
The girl dropped to her knees the moment she saw me.
“Please,” she whispered urgently.
“Please take us.”
My eyes flicked to her.
“Us?”
She nodded quickly.
“They’ll kill her.”
Her voice trembled.
“And me if I speak.”
I didn’t hesitate.
I nodded once.
“Both of you.”
The mission just got harder.
I didn’t care.

“Amber, you have thirty seconds,” Marcus warned.
Jason stepped in beside me.
He crouched down carefully besides the younger girl.
“It’s okay,” he murmured softly.
The girl flinched.
Hard.
Her body trembling violently.
Jason didn’t touch her immediately.
“Hey… we’re getting you out.”
Slowly.
Carefully.
He lifted her.
She let out a small, broken sound.
Like moving hurt.
Like everything hurt.
My jaw clenched.
“Movement-west corridor,” Marcus said sharply.
“We need to move,” Jason said.
We moved.
Fast.
The older girl stayed close behind me.
Barefoot.
Silent. 1
Terrified.
“Two guards incoming,” Marcus warned.
“Three seconds.”
Too close.
Too close.
My heart pounded.
Jason didn’t even flinch.

“Creating diversion,” Marcus said suddenly.
Asecond later
An alarm blared from the far end of the estate.
Loud.
Urgent.
Chaotic.
Guards shifted direction instantly.
“Go. Now.”
We ran.
No more stealth.
No more waiting.
Jason held the girl securely, her small body trembling against him.
She whimpered softly.
Each sound cutting deeper than the last.
We reached the entrance.
Burst through the doors.
Cold night air hit us.
“Left,” Marcus guided.
Pamela was already there.
Engine running.
Door open.
“Get in!”
We didn’t hesitate.
Jason climbed in with the girl.
I pulled the maid in after me.
Door slammed.
“Go!”
Pamela didn’t even look back.
The car shot forward.
Fast.

Silence filled the car.
Heavy.
Shaking.
The younger girl, my cousin, was still trembling in Jason’s arms.
Her breathing uneven.
Painful.
Each small sound she made felt wrong.
Too fragile.
Too broken.
The older one sat beside me.
Hands shaking.
Eyes wide.
Still in shock.
