A Widow's Poison, A Wife's Rebellion novel Chapter 1151

Fairfax Yelchin woke up with a start.

The moment he learned Susanna planned to fly to Yoran Country and trade herself for the Yelchin family hostages held by Yardley Hoggart, his face went pale with fury.

"You are not going!"

Even if every single Yelchin was currently rotting in Yardley's dungeon, Fairfax wouldn't let his sister hand herself over. He knew exactly what Yardley was capable of, and the sheer amount of suffering Susanna would endure was unthinkable.

Yvonne sat on the sofa nearby, listening to Fairfax's unwavering command. She clicked her tongue, shaking her head. "Wow. Blood really is thicker than water, isn't it? The way you protect your own is truly something else."

Fairfax and Susanna both froze.

Amos shot Yvonne a warning glance, rubbing his temples.

Yvonne ignored him. "When you wanted Starla to trade herself for your family, you swore up and down that you could guarantee her safety."

"So, since you're so confident in your protective skills, why don't you guarantee your own sister's safety and send her to make the trade?"

When it was Starla on the chopping block, he hadn't hesitated for a second. He had pushed her right into the line of fire with pretty words about keeping her safe.

Who could guarantee anyone's safety in a volatile, dangerous environment?

He had practically sacrificed Starla for his relatives. Now that it was his own flesh and blood who had to step up, suddenly he was firmly against it.

Fairfax shot Yvonne a suffocated look.

Yvonne raised an eyebrow. "What? Am I lying? Or is the life of someone who shares your DNA just that much more precious than Starla's?"

"When it was her, you didn't bat an eye. Now that it's your family, you're paralyzed?"

"You can relax," Yvonne added mockingly, throwing Fairfax's own past excuses right back in his face. "Yardley went through all this trouble to drag Susanna back; he obviously doesn't want her dead."

Fairfax's face drained of color.

Lately, the terrible things he had said to Starla at the very end haunted him relentlessly. Hearing Yvonne throw his own hypocritical logic back at him felt like a physical blow to the chest.

"Could you just stop?" Susanna pleaded quietly.

Back then, Fairfax had justified sending Starla by saying Yardley was her biological brother and wouldn't actually kill his own flesh and blood.

Now that the exact same logic applied to Susanna, why was he suddenly so panicked?

Amos groaned inwardly. Realizing this was about to escalate into a full-blown screaming match, he grabbed Yvonne's arm and practically dragged her out of the room.

...

Once they were gone, the room fell into a heavy silence.

Fairfax turned to his sister. "You are not going to Yoran Country."

"Yvonne is right, Fairfax. Yardley won't kill me."

"Shut up!" Fairfax snapped, his voice hard.

He wouldn't let her risk her life. Not for anything.
