After Frank left, Joseph smoked a cigarette to calm himself down. He was also forced to face the reality that he and Cora were not equals. The imbalance wasn’t just limited to wealth. It extended into every aspect of their lives.

The idea that husband and wife had equal rights and obligations existed neatly in legal statutes, but in reality, no marriage was ever truly equal.

In Joseph’s marriage, Cora was, without a doubt, the dominant one.

Joseph kept repeating to himself that Cora had betrayed him and the love he had for her, and that she’d pay the price. He refused to surrender so easily.

Not long afterward, Lacey knocked on the door and entered.

Joseph scowled. “What are you doing here again? Practically everyone in the hospital has seen you before. Aren’t you afraid someone will recognize you? And you even came here dressed like an escort.”

Lacey replied, “I don’t have a choice. Yvonne got dragged into this because of what happened between you and me I can’t live with myself if I just let her suffer like this. Punish me however you want. Just please, save Yvonne.”

Joseph rubbed his temples. “You people really don’t listen, do you? Lacey, the Lowells and the Ashmores have been going through some serious trouble. You shouldn’t miss out on this opportunity.”

Then, Joseph had Paige come in to arrange treatment for the patients before heading into the ward.

Frank quickly found Cora. After dismissing Fiona and the others, he got straight to the point. “Cora, you’ve got to help me out this time. Get Joseph to use that treatment of his to wake my wife and child up.”

Cora raised an eyebrow. “Joseph has a way to wake them up?”

Cora naturally knew of Frank’s situation. She looked at him curiously, more interested in whether Joseph’s medical skills were truly that extraordinary.

“Instead, they came in swinging with underhanded tactics from the start. All we can do now is be on the defensive.

Frank shouted, “I don’t care about any of that now. Right now, all I care about is being a proper father and husband. I’ll stop at nothing to save them. Cora, you know my situation. So many of the Ashmores are dead or injured. Our company stock is under attack, and we’re on the brink of bankruptcy.

“The Ashmores are finished. What do I have left besides them?”

Cora could see that Frank was close to breaking, and was forced to console him. “Calm down. I’ll talk to Joseph and make sure he treats them.”

If Frank completely lost control and exposed her situation to Joseph, the misunderstanding between her and Joseph would only deepen.

She thought to herself that if Joseph’s medical abilities were really more amazing than she thought, then hé might actually become her final lifeline.
