Joseph wondered, “What am I doing all this for?”

By the time Joseph finished dealing with everything at the hospital, it was already late at night. He didn’t want to go home, so he planned to make do on the office couch.

Standing by the window and looking at the darkness outside, he couldn’t help but feel a deep sense of emptiness and loneliness. Among the patients he’d treated today were members of the Lowell family and the Ashmore family. They were people he despised, or the relatives of those he despised.

Yet, he’d still done everything in his power to save their lives. Perhaps his drive came from nothing more than doctor’s duty and conscience.

As he drifted through his thoughts, there was a knock on the door.

He went to open it and found Cora waiting outside.

“What are you doing here?” Joseph was surprised, but he stepped aside and let her enter.

“Come home. It’s more comfortable at home.” Cora glanced around the office before her eyes settled on the pillow and blanket on the couch. Without a doubt, that couch had become Joseph’s bed.

Joseph remained silent.

Cora said softly, “If not for me, then do it for the children. Selena’s been acting strangely for the past two days. Last night, she smashed a flower pot. Today, she left the faucet running during her shower and flooded half the bathroom.

“She’s become unusually rebellious. She won’t listen to me, and won’t listen to my parents either. But she’s always listened to you. You should go see her.”

Selena…

The name twisted like a knife in Joseph’s chest, suddenly overwhelming him with pain.

“Let’s go.”

In the end, Joseph gave in and left with Cora. Outside, Joseph spotted several bodyguards stationed nearby, while a six-vehicle convoy waited in formation.

Even Cora had changed cars. She was now traveling in an armored luxury van that Joseph recognized as bulletproof.

Cora sighed. “I’m serious. You know Grace. You know what kind of person she is. All the patients you treated today were connected to her. Even if she wasn’t directly responsible, her team was involved.”

Joseph cut her off. “I believe you. You don’t need to explain so much. It’s late, so let’s just get it done quickly tonight and get some sleep.”

Cora wrapped her arms around Joseph’s neck and held him tightly. Joseph’s directness and roughness caught her completely off guard. But the things she’d done in the past two days had to be kept hidden from Joseph. She felt guilty, so she didn’t utter a word of protest.

Yet she also believed everything she’d done had been for the sake of the Lowells. Even if she told Joseph the truth, there was nothing he could do to help. So keeping him in the dark was better for him.

“Who do you think is more beautiful? Grace or me?” Cora suddenly asked.

“What?” Joseph looked at her.

“I said, I love you, honey.” Cora hugged Joseph tightly, not wanting to say anything more.

Deep down, she had a feeling that sending Lacey to Joseph had been a terrible mistake. Perhaps she had opened a door within Joseph that could never be closed again.
