Chapter 124
The next day, Joseph arrived at the hospital to find Dave already there, which surprised him a little. “Did you hear about what happened to Bill, Joseph? The guy who transferred out of our department?”
“Yeah, a few professors and students from the university called me last night and told me Bill got arrested at home. I don’t know the details, though. You probably know more about it, right?”
Joseph didn’t really want to discuss it since it was none of his business.
“I asked someone I know in the legal system earlier. And they did reveal a few details to me without compromising their principles. Apparently, when Bill went out drinking last weekend, he brought a woman from a nightclub home.
“Last night, that woman went to the police and accused him of assaulting her. She had some pretty solid evidence, too, so they arrested him. I never took him for that kind of guy.”
“At the end of the day, all of us are just regular people.”
Joseph did not bring up Bill again. After talking about the team structure for a bit, he got started on the preparations for the morning meeting.
As Dave was unable to figure Joseph out, he found Joseph to be an enigma.
Later that morning, Ernest’s condition took a turn for the worse again. Joseph stepped in to stabilize him once more, but he still insisted that the Ashmore family transfer him to another hospital.
When Joseph stepped out of the ward, Paige told him that Marvin was waiting for him in his office.
“Dr. Pierce? What’s he doing here?” Joseph asked.
“No clue. He was holding a CT scan report, so it’s probably about one of his patients.”
Upon returning to his office, Joseph closed the door and got straight to the point. “Dr. Pierce, what are you plotting this time? Are you trying to come after me, or Dave?”
“Come on, Dr. Hart. I’ve always thought highly of you and supported your work.”
Joseph sat down before lighting a cigarette. His eyes narrowed as he saw right through Marvin’s act. Wasn’t it only a few days ago that you said I had no chance of getting back into the hospital as long as you’re still here?”
Joseph had not expected Marvin to take the bait so easily, so he continued steering the trouble in Walt’s direction.
When Joseph saw the obvious shift in Marvin’s expression at the mention of Walt, he knew he had Marvin right where he wanted him.
While taking a short break in his office, Joseph called Fiona to ask about Marla.
“Fiona, have you been slacking off? It’s been days, and you still can’t tell me anything about Marla.”
“What am I supposed to do when she’s gone into hiding? I’m not a cop. If I were, I’d put her face on a global wanted list.”
“Cut the crap. I know you’re just doing what Cora tells you. Keep hiding things from me if you want, but sooner or later, I’m going to settle the score with you both!”
After hanging up, Joseph thought for a moment before calling Helen. If Helen knew about the man Cora was cheating with, and if the mother and daughter were in on it together, then no amount of provocation would be too much.
But if Helen didn’t know, Joseph felt obligated to encourage her to find out the truth.
