A Man with Nerves of Steel (Joseph Hart) novel Chapter 122

Chapter 122

The patient Joseph had been called in to save was none other than Ernest. Early in the morning, Ernest’s condition suddenly took a turn for the worse. The doctors on duty had no choice but to contact Joseph and the others.

By the time Joseph arrived at the hospital, Walt and the rest had just gotten there as well. There was no time for small talk. Everyone headed straight into the treatment.

They worked until dawn. It was only then that Ernest’s condition stabilized. Walt let out a long breath of relief. He ordered breakfast for the staff and asked to speak with Joseph privately.

Walt began, “Joseph, you’ve seen the situation for yourself. Just now, you performed the surgery, but I signed it off. Regardless of the outcome, the patient’s family won’t hold you responsible.”

“I don’t have confidence in the outcome. Performing surgery would practically be pushing the patient toward death. You wouldn’t dare perform it yourself either,” Joseph replied.

Walt muttered, “I believe you can do it.”

Joseph immediately cut him off. “That’s emotional blackmail. I know exactly how vital Ernest’s survival is to you and your associates. That’s why I already had Cora tell the Lowell family last night to transfer him to a major hospital in a major city as soon as possible.

“A patient this critical should never have remained here this long. Keeping him at Jenton University Hospital is irresponsible on all of your parts.”

Walt sighed. “About the issues between you and Cora, I would like to help, but my capability is limited. There’s really not much I can…”

“My issues with Cora are personal matters. They have nothing to do with the hospital and you. Don’t bring her up,” Joseph snapped.

Not long ago, Joseph had hoped Walt might support him. Now, Joseph realized that Walt was simply another figure propped up by the Lowell family. The realization made Joseph feel naive.

If society truly was divided into classes, Walt was merely in the middle. How could someone at that level influence a person like Cora, who sat near the top?

Next, Mavis and Ethan would be returning for treatment. With that understanding, Joseph stopped being polite. He immediately removed the staff backed by Walt and Marvin from the ICU department.

In their place, Joseph promoted doctors with strong technical skills that he trusted. Some were transferred from other departments within the hospital, and others were recruited from other hospitals. After drafting a list of personnel changes, he handed it to Dave to implement.

The Ashmore family arrived at the hospital seeking an update from Joseph. Nonetheless, he only suggested they transfer Ernest.

Wendy refused to believe it. She closed the door and confronted Joseph alone. “Are you still holding a grudge against me? Is that why you’re refusing to save him?”

“You aren’t important enough for that. It has been days. You’ve already consulted more than one doctor. At this point, you should know what kind of condition he’s in,” stated Joseph.

With that, Joseph glared at Wendy with disdain. Not wanting to continue the conversation, he walked out to begin his patient rounds.
