A Man with Nerves of Steel (Joseph Hart) novel Chapter 103

Chapter 103

When Cora returned home that night, she burst into the study room without knocking and questioned Joseph sharply, “Why did you reach out to someone like Bobby Baker?

Don’t you know what the Bakers do? You’ve got a clean record. Don’t get involved in all this stuff”

Joseph knew that even if Fiona kept this a secret, the housekeeper would still follow him. He wasn’t even surprised that Cora knew his whereabouts.

“You knew I went looking for Bobby, but do you even know why?

“You operated on Lionel Baker. Otherwise, you’d never get involved with them. Of course, if this is just a doctor-patient matter that could be handled at the hospital, I won’t pursue it any further.

“But this time, you took the initiative to seek them out. I’m afraid you’re going down the wrong path.”

There was a problem with Lionel Baker’s CT scan. Were you behind this? Joseph decided to be upfront about it.

Of course not. If I hadn’t found out about it afterward, I would never have known that something like this happened to you.

‘Still, you got out of this without a scratch, Joe. You didn’t lose anything either. Just stop getting involved in this. Let me handle the investigation. I’ll tell you what happened later.”

Cora walked over to Joseph and stroked his cheek, saying, “Honey, I love you the most. I’m your wife. You should trust me.”

“What are you trying to do? If you had been more honest with me, I’d know you better and trust you even more. You think I don’t have the right to know the truth?”

“You know exactly what I’ve done. I have nothing to hide from you.”

Cora met Joseph’s gaze, a barely perceptible hint of hesitation flickering in her eyes. Worned he might notice, she shut her eyes and leaned in to kiss him first.

Joseph and Cora enjoyed a quiet, tender moment together before heading out for dinner

After returning to the study, Joseph gave Fiona a call and got straight to the point. ‘Fiona, why did you tell Cora I went looking for Bobby?

“Again? Do you really think that’s a coincidence? Fiona, I’ve always trusted you, but you’ve been screwing me over all this time. 1

“If I turn Cora against you, she’ll probably choose me over you. By then, have you thought about what might happen to you?”

“Joseph, don’t be rash. I swear I’m not lying to you. That’s all I know. Cora trusts me, but apart from legal matters, she doesn’t share anything else with me.”

Hearing that, Joseph ended the call immediately.

Once he thought Cora was available, he went to bring it up with her again. As expected, she didn’t tell him what had actually happened and remained convinced that it was a medical staff error.

Joseph could clearly feel that Cora was hiding something from him. He guessed that either she really wasn’t involved in this or she was deliberately keeping the truth from him. She was probably worried that if he kept digging into the truth, it might expose someone who knew her secret.

Perhaps it involved her secret lover.
