Chapter 363: Chapter 134: The Green Tea Female Supporting Character in a Period Novel (21)

Her heart ached at the thought that life’s hardships had forced her daughter to grow up.

"Yun’er, did you receive the package and letter I mailed you last month? The one with the two tins of malted milk, two bags of powdered milk, a big bag of hawthorn strips, and a bag of raisins?"

Chi Yun’er hummed in agreement.

"As long as you got it, that’s good, that’s good," Mrs. Chi said from the other end of the line, a mix of laughter and tears in her voice. She wiped at her eyes, fighting to keep her voice steady:

"Your uncle sent over some more of that shredded squid you love, along with some dried shrimp and seaweed for soup. I also just got some sandwich cookies that keep well. I’ll mail everything to you in a bit..."

"Do you still have enough money? Your dad and I just got our summer heat subsidies..."

Listening to her mother, who sounded ready to mail her everything they owned, Chi Yun’er gripped the receiver, sobbing too hard to speak.

"Yun’er, what’s wrong? Why are you crying so hard? Did someone bully you?"

"Hurry and tell me! You’re going to worry me to death..."

Chi Yun’er forced a smile. "Mom, I’m fine. I just miss you and Dad."

She didn’t beat around the bush. "The rush harvest just ended, and Brother Hua is taking a grain convoy to Mongolia. He’ll be passing through the Capital City."

"I’ve been in the countryside for over a year without taking any leave. I just got my request approved, so it’s the perfect chance to catch a ride home."

"Mom, Dad, can you help me find a job? I’m not coming back here this time."

Mrs. Chi was stunned for a moment, but she didn’t dare hesitate and quickly agreed. "Oh, of course! As long as you’re coming home, that’s what matters. What kind of job do you want?"

Chi Yun’er chuckled, speaking as if it were her birthright. "One that’s close to home, of course! A comfortable office job where I don’t have to deal with office politics, with a light workload and great pay and benefits!"

In that moment, she felt like her younger self again—sheltered by her parents, able to take everything for granted, never having to second-guess herself.

"Okay. Just the other day, your dad was saying his unit is hiring."
