Jiang Zishi glanced at Chi Yun’er’s triumphant expression, then at the young man standing guard against him, and left in a huff.
"Mr. Chi, I’ll be leaving then. If you need anything, just come find me at the security section. The boss talked to the guys before he left," the young man said with a light chuckle.
Chi Yun’er smiled and nodded. "Thank you. When Brother Hua gets back, I’ll have him give you all some extra wild boar meat for your meals."
The busy days passed quickly. At first, Chi Yun’er found herself thinking of a certain someone, but once she threw herself into her work, time flew by.
Jiang Yihua and his men had great success. In three days, they swept the surrounding mountains, tracked down the wild boar herds, and, using traps and tranquilizers, took out five entire sounders!
Wild boars reproduce quickly and have a high survival rate, with two litters a year. They are omnivorous, social animals—fierce, aggressive, and with few natural predators. As such, if left unchecked for a time, their population could easily grow to plague-like proportions in the lush forest.
Batch after batch of wild boars were transported down from the mountains, and the farm workers were even more excited than when grain was being distributed. Of course, in addition to the boars, there was plenty of other common game like pheasants, wild rabbits, and roe deer.
Because Jiang Yihua’s contribution to the hunt was so great, he was given a young wild boar weighing over a hundred pounds, three pheasants, three wild rabbits, and a roe deer, all of which was to be processed by the canteen chefs.
Chi Yun’er told Jiang Yihua the whole story of Jiang Zishi coming to see her. "I had no idea he misunderstood me so profoundly," she said with a sigh.
"I’ve always just thought of him as a brother. I had no idea he thought I was in love with him..."
Jiang Yihua smiled, ruffled her hair, and pulled her into his arms. "Why don’t you come with me on the truck this time?"
"I can drop you off when we get to the Capital City, and then pick you up on my way back?"
Chi Yun’er froze. She looked up, grabbing his arm, and asked with a tremor in her voice, "Brother Hua, I... I can go back to the Capital City and see my parents?"
Jiang Yihua kissed her on the forehead and nodded with a smile. "Of course you can. You’ve been working in the countryside for over a year; you have enough vacation days saved up. As long as you find someone to cover your post so there are no delays, no one should give you any trouble."
’She’d been longing to go back for more than twenty years... The wonderful news was so sudden.’
Her eyes curved into crescents as an irrepressible smile spread across her face. Unsure how else to express her sheer joy, she stood on her tiptoes, pulled him down by the neck, and planted a hard kiss on his cheek.
But when was a man ever so easily satisfied?
Jiang Yihua had been thinking about her for days. He’d wanted to do this the moment they met...
