While waiting at a red light, Adora glanced at her phone and suddenly remembered it was Friday.
The Market Gods group was having an in-person meetup today.
Coach Ryan, Miles, and the White-Coat Deity were all attending.
She was about to open the group chat when the light turned green, so she put her phone down and kept driving.
When she got home, the Matthews family was gathered in the living room, deep in conversation about something.
The moment she walked in, every head turned in surprise, their eyes following her every step.
Theodore was the first to speak. “How are you feeling?”
Adora’s face stayed cold. “Thanks for asking. Still alive for now.”
“Listen to that attitude! Just listen to her!”
Lilian trembled with fury and snapped, “What’s wrong with your father’s trying to show concern? And you respond with sarcasm?
“Who do you think you are, walking around this house like we owe you something? Do you think we sent those traffickers after you?”
“Actually, yeah. It was your sweet little daughter who brought them in,” Adora said flatly.
The air instantly turned sharp, tension crackling like electricity.
Ruby opened her mouth to argue, but her eyes suddenly landed on the bag in Adora’s hand.
Her whole body tensed, and she tugged at Lilian’s arm, panic in her voice. “Mom… she brought something disgusting back again…”
Theodore’s face darkened. “What is it this time?”
Adora had reached the maid’s room by then.
She raised the bag and gave them a clear look. “Snacks for dear Ruby. A mix of snakes, bugs, and rats. Want a taste?”
There was silence.
Ruby’s face twisted. “Dad! Mom! She’s insulting me again!”
Adora watched her start to cry and felt absolutely nothing.
If anything, she egged her on. “You might want to save those tears. You’ll need them for prison.”
Ruby froze, her face going pale. “What… what do you mean?”
She stormed upstairs in tears.
Not long after, the sound of her yelling into the phone echoed through the house.
Ruby had clearly called Eugene for answers.
Back in the maid’s room, Adora finished feeding the kingsnake and lowered the cloth cover over its tank.
Her phone was still buzzing.
That was when she remembered the group chat she hadn’t checked.
Opening the app, she scrolled back through over a hundred unread messages.
Finally, she reached a photo—a group shot of three men.
A strange flutter of anticipation stirred in her chest.
She couldn’t help feeling excited to finally see what White-Coat Deity looked like.
She tapped on the photo and zoomed in, eager to get a better look…
