She had lied.
But when it came to half-truths and half-lies, no one could really tell the difference.
And with Ruby’s sensitive, insecure, and suspicious nature, she was bound to confront Eugene about it.
One spark was all it took to capsize a fragile love story.
She would love to see how long their sweet little romance would last.
She’d deal with everyone who betrayed her one at a time.
…
On Monday morning, Adora headed out early to the title office.
By the time she arrived, Louis was already there.
He kept his look simple—just a white shirt and dark trousers—but with those broad shoulders, narrow waist, and effortless proportions, he still looked impossibly put-together.
A pair of gold-rimmed glasses rested on his high-bridged nose, adding a scholarly edge to those striking eyes of his, making them even more dangerously alluring.
The moment Adora laid eyes on him, she rolled hers instinctively.
He was so flashy and full of himself.
Louis was on the phone, but he noticed her approach.
His gaze flicked at her from behind the lenses, cold and sharp, then just as indifferently looked away.
A mutual eye roll was their version of a greeting.
"Miss Matthews, I’ve taken a number, but there’s a bit of a wait," the agent said, bowing slightly, overly polite.
"Apparently there was a system update this morning. Still not sorted."
"That’s fine," Adora replied.
She had time to spare anyway.
She found a seat and sat down, casually scrolling through her phone.
Louis ended his call and, after hearing about the delay, took a seat as well—leaving a few empty chairs between them.
It was only natural because they couldn’t stand each other.
Adora posted another market analysis last night, predicting the opening trend for today’s stock market.
The comments were already flooding in.
She finally had time to go through them, leisurely scrolling and replying to the ones that caught her attention.
The Market Gods group chat had been blowing up with notifications all morning.
After Adora finished browsing the forum, she finally tapped in to see what the chatter was about.
She didn’t want to risk getting into unnecessary problems.
So, she replied, simply: Yes.
Mason: Wishing you all the best. Stay safe and well.
Madame Lee: Thank you.
White-Coat Deity: @Madame Lee, which hospital do you usually go to?
Adora was just about to decide how to respond when her phone screen suddenly changed.
It was an incoming call from Laura.
"Hey, Laura..."
"Adora, Eugene just called me asking for your number. Should I give it to him?" Laura asked.
Adora paused, then quickly pieced it together.
"Go ahead."
"Huh? Aren’t you worried he’ll bother you? If Ruby finds out you two are still in contact behind her back, she’ll lose it."
Laura knew exactly what kind of person Ruby was.
Adora gave a soft laugh, completely unbothered. "Let her. Honestly, I’d be disappointed if they didn’t make a scene."
