Amber Newman's nap was incredibly comfortable.
Stretching like a well-rested cat, she seemed to think she was still dreaming. A smile played on her lips as she murmured, "Shep, stop it."
Shep was the chunky gray-and-white tabby she had adopted in her past life.
It wasn't actually her cat to begin with. Sharif Madison had given him to her, and over time, he just became hers.
Every time she woke up or took a nap, the playful feline would bother her.
Amber was completely oblivious, assuming it was just the cat. Meanwhile, Sharif had Julian Zeller park the car right at the intersection of her alley. The problem was, the position of the car was incredibly awkward.
Sharif raised an eyebrow. Was his Little Fox always this restless in her sleep?
In the driver's seat, Julian's eyes widened. He stared in disbelief through the rearview mirror. It was crazy enough that Amber was resting her head on his boss's lap, but was she actually grabbing his abs right now?
Could Mr. Madison really tolerate this?
Sharif just arched an eyebrow. He had offered her a ride to find out who was backing his Little Fox, but she had fallen asleep within five minutes of getting into the car. Not only was she asleep, but she was all over the place. Shep? Sharif? Who was she calling out for!
Snuggling deeper into Sharif's embrace, she finally began to wake up.
Her eyes fluttered open to meet the man's dark, cosmic gaze. His eyes were deep and distant, radiating an undeniable wicked charm. He exhaled softly against her face. "Awake? Did you sleep well, Miss Newman?"
His gaze held a mixture of restrained anger—as if he wanted to kick her out of the car—and a heavy dose of amusement, treating her like his prey. A shiver ran down her spine.
*Thud.*
Before she could jump back, a large hand shot out to protect her head, saving her from smashing it against the car window. Thankfully, the luxury vehicle was spacious enough that she landed safely on the cushioned seats instead of eating dirt.
Amber stared at him in confusion.
Why was Sharif here? Wait, no—why had she fallen asleep in his car?
She really had some nerve, completely unconcerned that he might just sell her off.
It wasn't entirely her fault. During the three years she worked as his secretary, she had fallen asleep in his car a few times. But usually, when she woke up, either he was gone or she had maintained a perfectly professional posture.
She didn't think she was an ugly sleeper, but she could easily imagine the embarrassing state she was just in. The evidence was all there: a suspicious damp spot of drool on his thigh and the wrinkled fabric of his shirt where her hands had grabbed him.
—It was all staring her right in the face.
Damn it, was she out of her mind?
"Thank you for the ride, Mr. Madison. I have things to do, so I'll get going. Goodbye."
She bolted faster than anyone, as if staying a second longer would mean Julian tossing her out instead.
Whoosh! Sharif watched her run like a ghost was chasing her. Sitting up perfectly straight, he smoothed out his expensive, wrinkled suit jacket and trousers. "Little Fox, teasing me and then running away!"
He didn't do anything to her, right?!
She quickly checked her uniform. Her hair and pants were completely dry from the car's AC. Even if he did do something, wasn't it a bit late to check now? Besides... taking advantage of someone wasn't really his style.
If he wanted a woman, he just had to snap his fingers.
Just like in her past life, why was he always so gentle and chivalrous toward her?
"Amber, is everything okay? I was calling you, but you didn't hear me."
Xanthe Sutton was busy at the food stall. She hadn't paid much attention to the street until she heard some customers gossiping about a luxury car parked at the intersection.
She didn't know much about fancy cars, but she glanced over just in time to see Amber bolting out of it. She couldn't even call out fast enough before Amber was sprinting away like a vicious dog was on her heels.
Worried something was wrong, she dropped her dishes and ran after her.
"I'm fine, Xanthe." Amber completely ignored the fact that she had just run past Grace Diner. Seeing Xanthe here, she glanced toward the diner and frowned. "Are you here by yourself? Where's my dad?"
Xanthe smiled. "Grace was discharged from the hospital. Arthur helped her walk back home."
Amber laughed dryly at that. Discharged so soon? More like she just wanted to use Arthur as free labor back at her two-bedroom apartment.
"Listen to me, Xanthe. Do exactly as I say later. Don't let Grace get away with this." Amber pulled out her phone and handed it to her.
