Two Reborn, One Throne novel Chapter 162

After hanging up the phone with Sharif Madison—having asked him to look into Xanthe's ex-husband—Amber Newman returned to their apartment.

There was no sign that Arthur had been home, which she didn't mind. Amber opened the door to the neighboring unit, packed some daily necessities and a hot dinner for Xanthe, and headed back to the hospital.

Xanthe had just woken up. Even if she wanted to sleep, the pain radiating through her body made it impossible.

While the nurse changed her IV, Amber asked about hiring a private caregiver.

Just as the nurse started explaining the process, Xanthe interrupted, "Amber, don't worry about a caregiver. I'll be fine."

"Stop worrying about the money. Your main priority right now is healing. Once you're better, you can make it all back." Amber set the hot food and soup on the table in front of her.

"Come on. Food is fuel. You need to eat, especially when you're hurt."

Xanthe smiled, which tugged at her bruises, leaving her caught between laughing and wincing.

Amber told her not to move; she would feed her.

Only then did Xanthe ask, "Amber, you missed your exam this afternoon. Is it going to affect you badly? Will the school..."

"You're worrying too much again. If you've got so much energy to stress over me, why are you stopping me from hiring a nurse?" Amber teased.

Xanthe looked entirely guilt-ridden. "Amber..."

From outside the door came a voice neither of them wanted to hear. "Lucian, I'm really fine. I don't need to be hospitalized. I was just caught off guard, which is why Loretta managed to get the upper hand. Once I'm better, I'll show her what I'm capable of."

"Enough. We'll talk about it when you're healed. I've hired a nurse for the night, and I'll come see you tomorrow after my exams." Lucian left no room for argument.

Grace immediately started complaining. "It's all that pushover Arthur's fault. If he had just answered his phone, I wouldn't have gotten beaten up so badly."

Lucian raised an eyebrow. "Mom..."

"Are you going to lecture me too? If you ask me, this whole mess started with you. If you hadn't gotten involved with Joanne, Amber wouldn't be taking her revenge out on me. Lucian..."

"Like I said before, my dad isn't going to listen to you anymore. You'd better find yourself a new lackey."

"Amber..." Grace flared up, but the moment she yelled, a sharp pain shot through her body, making her gasp for air.

Seeing that Grace was just as battered as she was, Xanthe kept a smile on her lips. "Don't worry, Amber. As soon as I'm better, I'll confess my feelings to Arthur and beg him to marry me."

Amber's eyes curved into a bright smile. "You're the best, Xanthe."

Grace looked like she was going to be sick. "Do you think you're some beauty queen, Xanthe? You think men just fall at your feet? No matter how 'nice' you are, you're still not a complete woman. Even if we're both past our prime, there's a difference between not having kids and being incapable of it."

"Let me give you some advice: go back to the Sutton family. No matter how bad they are, they're your blood. Amber only needs you right now because she wants to stop her dad from taking care of us. But after twelve years, let me tell you the truth... he can't bear to let me go."

Grace was overflowing with confidence. Seeing her smug expression, Amber's lips curled into a smirk. "Oh? Is that so? Then why don't you turn around and ask my dad, who's standing right in the doorway, if he really can't bear to let you go?"

Grace froze, entirely too terrified to look back.
