Grace thought that since she had escaped Damien's beating today, she was safe.
After taking a nap in the afternoon, she opened her eyes to find it was already dark.
She checked her phone. Not only had Arthur not called or sent a voice memo, her son hadn't either.
*That pushover Arthur is definitely being bullied by that brat Amber again, not allowed to call me.*
*That wretched girl! I hope she never finds a husband and dies an old maid. She isn't even fit to warm my son's bed!*
Grace got up, washed up, and made herself a bowl of noodles.
Just then, someone pounded on the door. She jumped in fright. Feeling guilty, she wondered if Amber had come knocking.
*Probably not. If her dad knew she came to cause a scene, he wouldn't even need me to lift a finger—he'd beat her himself.*
But the knocking was real.
"Who is it?" Grace yelled.
The person didn't answer. Annoyed, Grace shouted, "Stop banging! If you break the door, can you afford to fix it?"
The pounding continued, faster and more aggressive than before, practically daring Grace to open it in a fit of rage.
Sure enough, she yanked the door open. Before she could even unleash her anger, Loretta kicked the door, sending it crashing into Grace and knocking her to the floor. "Grace, you rotten bitch! You get my cousin beaten up and think I don't exist?!"
Shocked, Grace let out a pig-like squeal. But she wasn't going to get a word in edgewise. Loretta, the infamous hothead of the alley, unleashed her full fury. She was not someone to be messed with.
Loretta threw punches left and right, and Grace's face instantly swelled up. "I'll teach you to mess with my cousin! I'll teach you to cause trouble! You selfish bitch, stringing Arthur along and hoarding him to yourself! You're jealous that my cousin and Amber's dad are happy together, aren't you?! Let's see how evil you are now! I'm going to skin you alive today!"
"Did my cousin tell you to string him along?! Did she steal your man?! You sure know how to spin a story! Even a professional storyteller couldn't beat you!"
Sitting on top of Grace, Loretta delivered several resounding slaps. *Smack! Smack! Smack!*
But Grace wasn't a pushover either. "Loretta, you crazy bitch! I haven't even settled the score with you yet, and you deliver yourself to my door! How dare you hit me!"
The two women violently brawled on the floor. Neighbors going up and down the stairs peeked out of their doors. Having suppressed their frustration since noon, they finally felt vindicated. Someone whispered, "Beat her up! Beat her up! Beat her up!"
Grace had needed a beating for a long time. As women, they all found her behavior shameful.
*Refusing to commit to a guy but keeping him on a leash? Arthur is such a fool, but go Loretta! Beat her to a pulp!*
Crashing noises echoed from the apartment. No one stepped in to stop it. Instead, neighbors grabbed handfuls of sunflower seeds and sat in the stairwell to watch the show.
"Ahhh!"
Even if it was for his own good, she shouldn't have done it without a word.
If today hadn't happened, would he have been kept in the dark for the rest of his life?
Suddenly, the phone in his pocket rang. Arthur had never felt such emotional defeat, especially when he saw the caller ID was Grace.
He took a massive gulp of beer, letting the evening breeze clear his head a little.
"Why are you calling me?! Haven't you made me enough of a joke?! Are you trying to offer some fake sympathy now?! I don't need it! I don't need it!"
Arthur screamed hysterically at the ringing phone. Utterly fed up, he declined the call and immediately blocked her number. "I'm done! I don't care anymore! You can all do whatever you want! So what if I die alone? I'm exhausted. I'm done being everyone's servant!"
Arthur collapsed onto the grass. The forty-five-year-old man simply covered his face and wept.
Hearing the line go dead and realizing she couldn't get through again, Grace finally burst into tears. "Arthur, you absolute pushover!"
After recovering from the shove, Loretta went to the kitchen, grabbed a knife, and started hacking at the bedroom door. Between strikes, she yelled, "Grace, you rotten bitch! Come out here! Do you think hiding in there will save you?!"
Grace hurriedly dialed Lucian's number.
"Lucian! Come save me!~~"
