Amber felt pretty good about the Literature exam.
With twenty minutes still on the clock, she handed in her paper early.
Vance, who was in the same exam room, stared at her in shock, his mouth hanging open. Before he could even marvel at her speed, the proctor glared at him. "Vance Leavitt, eyes on your own paper. Twenty minutes left, everyone. Keep working."
Amber stepped out into the hallway and peered through the window at him. Vance immediately started sweating bullets, terrified that if he failed Literature, Amber would skin him alive.
Tillie, who had been placed in a different exam room, finished early as well and walked over to join Amber in the hallway. Knowing that these two—the tenth and fiftieth-ranked students in the grade—were tutoring Vance, the proctor pretended not to notice them.
Even a blockhead like Vance was bound to learn something eventually.
But the pressure on him was immense. Amber was doing this on purpose. This was just a mock exam; the actual finals would be far more brutal.
She needed Vance to internalize this crushing pressure so that he would memorize every single answer before the final sprint.
Vance's hand trembled so badly he didn't dare look up at Amber or Tillie, forcing himself to keep writing his essay.
Lucian also handed his paper in early. Stepping out into the hallway, he saw Amber and Tillie staring down Vance, and a sneer curled on his lips.
In his past life, Amber had always finished before him, waiting outside his window just like she was doing now.
Lucian had absolutely despised it back then. Seeing her waiting for someone else now left an inexplicably foul taste in his mouth.
Joanne, on the other hand, had handed in her paper after barely thirty minutes. She didn't have the brains to write a perfect exam like Lucian, nor the discipline to struggle until the last second like a bad student.
Instead of sitting there bored, she'd rather go play games or browse the internet somewhere.
When Lucian finally texted her, she logged off her game. By the time they met up, the exam period was officially over.
Vance was terrified to leave the classroom, feeling an impending scolding. Seeing Amber's stern expression, Joanne mocked her. "Amber, you can't carve rotten wood. He did his best."
As if suddenly remembering her bet with Lucian, Joanne added, "You should probably worry about yourself. Lucian might have lost the physics competition, but he definitely won't lose this mock exam."
Amber laughed. "The exams aren't even over yet, and you're already talking big? Is this your little pre-defeat pep talk? By all means, laugh while you can."
Joanne glared at her. Lucian raised an eyebrow. "Don't bother talking to her, Joanne. If she wants the number one spot, she actually needs the skills to back it up."
"I'm hungry, let's go. We have to prepare for the Math exam this afternoon." With that, Lucian grabbed Joanne's hand and walked away.
"If you don't score a 450 overall on this mock exam, you know the consequences." Without sparing him another glance, Amber turned to Tillie. "Keep an eye on him. Make sure he reviews the practice questions after lunch. I'm heading home. See you this afternoon."
Tillie waved. Vance panicked. "You're not going to watch me?"
Amber shot back mercilessly, "You've embarrassed yourself enough already. You don't deserve to be watched."
Vance whimpered.
"Do well this afternoon. If you leave the Math equations I made you memorize blank, I'll beat you into a pulp." Amber shook her fist at him.
Vance looked like he was going to cry.
Tillie patted his shoulder. "Let's go. Start reviewing so she doesn't actually kill you."
Amber left the campus and headed for the bus stop. Just as she stepped outside, her phone rang.
Seeing it was Xanthe, she answered, ready to say she'd just finished testing and was on her way back. Instead, Xanthe's terrified, desperate voice echoed through the speaker: "Amber, help me! My brother is here to take me away! Amber!"
Amber's breath hitched in her throat.
