Two Reborn, One Throne novel Chapter 147

When Amber returned to the one-bedroom apartment, Xanthe was already waiting with dinner ready.

All her father had ever wanted in life was a warm home, a wife, and kids.

He had poured his heart out for twelve years and never gotten it.

Seeing Xanthe bring the dishes over from next door made Amber's eyes well up with tears.

Who wouldn't want a warm, loving home?

"Thank you, Xanthe."

Amber wasn't the type to act cutesy. She was actually very straightforward. Even if she wanted to act affectionate, she needed someone who would reciprocate.

Lucian absolutely hated it when she acted sweet. In her past life, she had tried, but he always poured cold water on her. He would either pretend not to understand or ask her if she was feeling sick.

After that, Amber simply called him unromantic and never tried again.

Xanthe, who was still holding a plate of food, froze for a second when Amber hugged her from behind. She set the dish down and patted Amber's hands with a motherly tenderness.

"No need to thank me. You're being too polite."

"Hurry up and wash your hands. I made your favorite honey-glazed roast today."

With that, Xanthe lifted the steaming plate of roast and waved it teasingly in front of Amber.

Amber's face instantly lit up with a brilliant, intoxicating smile.

"Thank you! I'll go wash up. Oh, by the way, is my dad not off work yet?"

Xanthe looked slightly uncomfortable. "Dustin told him to finish up at ten tonight."

Amber paused. Xanthe proceeded to tell her about the phone call Grace had made to her father at noon, and casually mentioned Wallace gossiping about Grace to her earlier.

"Amber, do you think we should find someone to keep an eye on Grace? Or maybe have the neighbors let your dad know if they see her out on blind dates?"

Amber shook her head immediately. "No. My dad wouldn't believe it."

"But this isn't going to work either. You didn't see how heartbroken your dad looked when Dustin hung up the phone for him. Even though he made a promise to you, I don't think he'll last five days before he caves. Also, when I came back today, the way Grace looked at me was really weird."

"Amber, I think she was fishing for information."

Amber blinked. "Fishing for information?"

Knowing she had an exam today, Xanthe had brewed a piping hot bowl of chicken soup for her, cheering her on endlessly.

Her dad had the day off. Dustin saw how out of it he looked and ordered him to take two days off to rest.

It was understandable that his spirit was low. However, he wasn't upset about the pact he made with Amber. He was agonizing over the fact that, for three whole days since Dustin hung up on Grace, she hadn't called or texted him once.

He had wanted to talk to Amber about it, but knowing she had her fifth mock exam today, he kept his mouth shut.

But he was a man who couldn't hide his emotions. He tossed and turned in his recliner, endlessly agonizing over what Grace was thinking.

Originally, she had wanted to break up with him. He had managed to coax her back, but then he hadn't answered her calls or texts the very next day. She was probably thinking they should just call it quits. She wasn't the clingy type. Reconciling one day and being ignored the next? If it were him, he wouldn't want to talk either.

He desperately wanted to call or text her, but remembering his promise to Amber, he kept telling himself to just wait three more days. As long as Grace didn't throw a fit, they could go right back to being together.

He prayed she wouldn't be angry and that she would just be patient. Ignoring her calls and messages was all for the sake of their future together.

If she truly cared for him the way he cared for her, he would gladly spend the rest of his life with her, even without an official marriage license.

But he was being utterly delusional. Grace had absolutely no intention of treating him the way he treated her. She was thrilled he didn't want the license—it just meant she could order him around as a free servant for life.

At that very moment, she was on her way to Fairhaven Village, intending to rile up the Sutton family so they'd drag Xanthe back home and stop meddling in her relationship with Arthur.
