Never in her wildest dreams did Joanne think her plan to have Wade destroy Amber would fail; even less did she imagine that Amber would turn the exact same trap against her.
Her eyes widened in disbelief. "Wade!"
It was a demand for an explanation. Why are you listening to her? You work for me!
Wade clenched his jaw, looking almost sympathetic. "Sorry, babe. I don't have a choice. Just grit your teeth; it'll be over soon."
Joanne didn't fully grasp what he meant, but anyone who dealt with thugs knew exactly what was implied.
She immediately dropped to her knees in front of Amber, sobbing. "Amber, I'm sorry! Please let me go! I shouldn't have set you up. You can't do this to me! If Lucian finds out—"
"If Lucian finds out, then what? Whatever you want to do to him is your business, but you targeted me." Amber crossed her arms over her chest. "Sorry, I'm not that forgiving."
"Wade, what are you waiting for? Do you want to end up in a cell, or do you want to keep your freedom?"
Wade gritted his teeth. "Sorry. Boys, get her..."
"No, Wade, don't! Amber, if you dare touch me, my dad won't let you get away with this!" Joanne had clearly thought that if her plan failed, she could just hide behind her father. She seemed to have completely forgotten that Amber had Sharif Madison backing her up.
Even Wade felt embarrassed for her. "Just shut up, Joanne."
"Why should I shut up?! Amber, you might be acting tough today, but unless you kill me right now—no, if you even lay a finger on me, my dad will bring his guys and flatten your house! Your dad is just some broke laborer! I'll have them camp outside your door until you starve or get beaten to death!"
"You came after me first! I'm just paying you back! Call them off right now! I'm not afraid of you!"
Slap!
Joanne's eyes bulged in shock as she stared at Wade. He looked both pained and exasperated. "I told you to shut up. Are you trying to humiliate yourself?"
"Just take it. We can't beat her."
"Yeah, look at us! Why do you think five of us got beaten to a pulp and are taking orders from her?"
"She's backed by Mr. Madison! The CEO of the Madison Group. You really messed up this time."
She had completely screwed them over.
Little did she know, Sharif had single-handedly taken all of them down. They hadn't even stood a chance.
It finally dawned on Joanne that she had made a colossal mistake.
—Right... how could I forget about Sharif?
But wait, how had he shown up so perfectly on time? Even with his backing, if they had already finished the job, she could have used the evidence to control Amber anyway.
"Joanne, you and I could have stayed out of each other's way. You could have just stayed with Lucian and lived your life. I wouldn't have stopped you, and I wouldn't have been jealous. But you crossed the line when you sent your dad's thugs to ruin me. Now, you have no one to blame but yourself."
"You say I targeted you first? The nerve! You were the one hiding a supernatural mess that Lucian's mother had to fix, yet you desperately tried to pin the blame on me. Even if I did set you up, did you really feel no guilt taking that money?"
"Lucian really must love you. He loves what a great actress you are. Wade, my time is limited. Can we speed this up?"
"Ahhh!" Joanne let out a bloodcurdling scream.
Amber stood off to the side, watching as Wade and his men prepared to inflict the exact same torment on Joanne that they had planned for her.
"No! Amber, I'm begging you! Please let me go! I know I was wrong! I'll never do it again!"
Amber didn't respond. Joanne was a pathological liar. If she let her go now, Joanne would just scheme a new way to destroy her tomorrow.
This was Joanne we were talking about—the same woman who, in her thirties, contracted a fatal disease and still plotted to ruin Amber even from her deathbed.
"No! Wade, please! Let me go! Let me go!" Joanne screamed for help, utterly terrified and completely regretful.
Why did this bitch have to be Sharif's favorite?
She was furious. She couldn't accept this.
