Just then, I saw a lady approaching, dressed in the same kind of straps as me, but hers were blue. The men parted around her, their hands still on me, and she came close and whispered into my ear.

“It is going to hurt a lot,” she said. “If it gets to a point where you fear you cannot take it anymore, then this will make the experience very enjoyable for you.”

She pressed a small pill into my palm, winked, and turned and walked away.

I stared at the pill, and then I felt the first tearing of the straps around my body, a man’s hands gripping the re material and ripping it away. Dread filled me, cold and heavy, and without wasting a moment, I threw the pill into my mouth and swallowed.

I told myself that no matter what, the pill was not going to kill me. I just had to get through everything. I would get that money. The fifty billion would not pass me by. It was my ticket, my ticket to everything I wanted, and when I had it, I was going back for Celeste and Dominic.
