Chapter 385
Experson walked to one of the cages and rolled it toward me, the iron bars gleaming under the low light. He opened the door and gestured inside. “Get in.”
I stared at him in shock. The cage was large, big enough for a person, with a red cloth draped over the top.
“Go on,” he said. “Get in.”
I swallowed. “Is this really necessary?”
He looked at me, and his face gave nothing away. “You don’t want to do it?”
“Of course I want to do it.” The words came out too fast. “Of course I want to do it.”
I climbed into the cage, crouching awkwardly because of the heels, and the red cloth fell over the bars, plunging me into darkness. I could not see anything, could only hear the creak of the wheels as the cage began to move, feel the vibrations through the metal floor. My heart was pounding so hard I thought it would burst, and I crouched there in the dark, my hands wrapped around my knees, telling myself to endure, to be patient, that this was all part of the plan.
The cage rolled for what felt like an eternity, and then it stopped, and I heard voices. Cheering. Clapping. A crowd, and the sound of it made my blood run cold.
Then the red cloth was ripped away, and light flooded in, blinding me. I threw my hand up to shield my eyes, and when they adjusted, I felt my stomach drop.
