Two Can Play (Celeste and Dominic) novel Chapter 371

I knew that building. Every man in my world knew that building.

Sparrow.

The most dangerous man in this city. A ghost with a reputation so black that men whispered his name like a prayer. And Scarlett and the other girls had walked straight into his compound.

I sat in my car at a distance, staring at those walls, and the questions piled up in my skull like corpses. What was Scarlett doing in Sparrow's house? How did she even know him? What could she possibly have offered a man like that?

I could not go closer. Not if I valued my life. Sparrow did not receive visitors; he gave warnings, and I had no intention of becoming one.

"Do a deeper search," I told my contact. "Pull every string you have. Find me a lead."

The search came back empty. The car had arrived today, and that was all anyone could find. No other trace. No other thread.

I walked away in defeat, my fists clenched so hard my nails bit into my palms, and I made myself a promise in the dark. I would not spare Scarlett. I would not spare any of them. They had stolen a hundred million dollars from me. Scarlett had deceived me, played me, and thrown her lot in with Dominic Ford. And I would make every single one of them pay. I did not know how. I did not know when. But I would.

By the time I reached the hospital, the night had gone late, and the corridors had that hollow, echoing silence that only hospitals have after visiting hours. I found Riley awake. Fully awake, sitting up in her bed with her hands twisted in the sheets, and the moment she saw me, her face crumpled and she started to cry.

The sound broke something in my chest. I crossed the room and sat on the edge of her bed, and she grabbed my hand with both of hers, her fingers cold and shaking.
