Two Can Play (Celeste and Dominic) novel Chapter 141

Chapter 141

His face crumpled, his shoulders sagging, his entire body deflating like a balloon that had been punctured. “Celeste, no, please, do not leave me, I cannot…

But I did not let him finish. I pushed the door open and walked out into the morning sunlight, the warmth of it hitting my face, the fresh air filling my lungs, and I felt a weight lift off my shoulders that I had not even realized I had been carrying. The door clicked shut behind me, muffling his voice, cutting off his pleas, sealing that chapter of my life closed.

I got into my car and drove straight to Helix Research Laboratory without looking back once. The drive was short, just a few minutes through the morning traffic, and I spent the entire time thinking about how light I felt, how free, how the chains I had been dragging around had finally fallen away.

I smiled as I remembered the bodyguards Dominic had sent. In the end, I really did need tftem. I made a mental note to call him later to thank him, maybe after he got off work, but then I hesitated. What if he was busy and my call irritated him? What if he was in a meeting or doing something with another woman, something that could not be interrupted? I decided to wait, to give it some time. I’ll call after a few days and thank him.

The last thing I expected when I walked into Helix was for Seraphine to show up minutes later and cause a scene.

I had not even had breakfast yet. I was standing in the main laboratory hall with Pat, discussing the new direction of our research, talking about funding allocations and project timelines and the thousand other details that came with running a facility, when I heard her voice cutting through the hum of conversation and machinery.

“Celeste! You shameless whore, come out here and face me!”

I looked up and saw Seraphine standing at the lobby of the lab, her face twisted with rage, her fists clenched at her sides, her chest heaving with the force of her breathing. Every head in the room had turned toward her, every conversation had stopped, every pair of eyes was fixed on the scene unfolding before them. Pat stared at me with wide eyes, her mouth hanging open, clearly unsure of what to do.

Once Seraphine was done saying everything she had on her mind, I kept my arms folded across my chest, leaned against the edge of the lobby and watched her with a calm expression on my face.

She looked so proud, so righteous, so convinced that she had dealt a heavy blow to me by coming here and making a scene in front of everyone.

“Is everything okay at home, Seraphine?” I finally asked, my voice sweet and pleasant, dripping with faux concern. “You should go to a hospital if you need help. This is not the right place for this kind of drama.”
